Chio-chan is running a little late to school again. She had stayed up all night again, playing online games. She takes a back alley to school only to find a motorcycle gangster sitting there, his bright pink motorcycle blocking the way. To make it worse, a salaryman is making his way through the same alley coming from the other side. As the two of them squeeze past each other, Chio-chan accidentally burns her leg from the bike's muffler. Her scream of pain draws the attention of the gangster. The salaryman panics and makes a run for it. As Chio-chan tries to call after him, she accidentally elbows the gangster in the face, knocking him out. Then, Chio-chan accidentally pushes his bike to the ground. When the gangster comes, Chio-chan is forced to adopt a tough persona to deter the gangster from beating her up. She introduces herself as "Bloody Butterfly" and claims that she's packing heat and shooting up foreigners all night. In truth, Bloody Butterfly is her online handle and she plays an online first-person shooting game against international players. She manages to convince the gangster enough for him to drive her to school.
Chio-chan and Manana are walking to school together when they notice that everybody in school seem to have coupled up. Except them. They soon find themselves walking behind Hosokawa and a dude and they assume the two are a couple. They are surprised though when Hosokawa and the dude disappear into an alley. Thinking that they're up to sexytimes, Manana goes after them to sneak a peek and Chio-chan follows along. While there, they witness Hosokawa turn the dude down, saying she wants to focus on track. The dude takes the rejection well enough and suggests that Hosokawa introduce him to her friends. This prompts Hosokawa to start talking about Chio-chan, which flatters Chio-chan and makes Manana jealous. As Hosokawa and the dude make their exit, they inevitably walk past Chio-chan and Manana, who are forced to hide their spying by pretending to make out.
One day, Chio-chan finds not just Manana but Hosokawa waiting for her to walk together to school. It turns out that Hosokawa figured out that Manana was Chio-chan's friend and befriends her also. As the three of them walk together, Manana makes small talk, starting with asking Hosokawa if she's still a virgin, much to Chio-chan's horror. Hosokawa says she's not experienced and throws the question right back to Manana. Manana reveals that she has kissed a college boy, to Chio-chan's shocked surprise. As the two girls walk on, talking about Manana's experience, it dawns on Chio-chan that Manana was trying to ingratiate herself to Hosokawa's affection and use this as a stepping stone in her ambition to become one of the popular girls in school. Manana tries to boost her image in front of Hosokawa by putting down a random dude standing by the side of the road. But the dude turns out to be a friend of Hosokawa's -- someone she has befriended while on a run. Chio-chan makes fun of Manana's fail and Manana later confesses that she lied about the college boy to impress Hosokawa. Chio-chan, however, is just relieved that Manana didn't really make out with a pedophilic college boy. This leads them to realize that the dude might be lying. When they confront him, the dude immediately confesses his lie but Hosokawa takes no offense, saying only that the distance he ran was not a lie. Then she suggests they run together, much to Chio-chan and Manana's confusion although they do as told.
COMMENTS:

Chio-chan is such an awkward nerd. Manana is a manipulative social climber. But the two of them know each other's failings so well and there's genuine affection there. Hosokawa seems like a genuinely cool gal, but we don't know what she's thinking. Is she faking it? Or is she genuine? Lots of funny stuff. I am still enjoying this show.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4719097153967321862.post-30070991949762032142018-07-22T19:14:00.003+08:002018-07-22T19:14:47.403+08:00First Impressions: Asobi Asobase Ep 1

Two girls, the energetic Hanako and the self-proclaimed foreign exchange student, Olivia, are playing a game in a classroom that is empty except for the two of them and one other classmate. This classmate, Kasumi, gets irritated by their noise but after taking practical considerations decides to join in. It turns out that Kasumi has been doing badly in English and wants to Olivia to teach her the language. Olivia, however, has been only pretending to be bad at Japanese -- because although her parents are both foreigners, she was born and raised in Japan and knows little English. But she keeps up the pretense as she's enjoying fooling Hanako too much and gets reluctantly drawn into really intense games with Kasumi. Eventually the three of them form a club for their past-time.
I don't really know how to recap this series, so I don't think I'm gonna blog about it. But I enjoyed the first episode. I appreciate slapstick humor and the super-deformed style, as you can see. And the girls have enjoyable personalities. It's not as funny as Chio-chan, which I actually want to blog about, but it is still fun and light and an easy watch.

A government ship filled with criminals on their way to be exiled is caught in a storm in the middle of the ocean. One of these criminals is a former Kamakura Shogunate retainer, Kuuchi Jinzaborou. A self-proclaimed rich merchant recognizes him but seems to have no respect for his kind. As the storm rages on, the prisoners beg the government personnel to free them from their handcuffs. After some reluctance, the government personnel do so only to have the prisoners mutiny almost immediately and throw them overboard. The mutiny is cut short once Kuuchi points out that they need to find shelter from the storm before they all drown. A large man with sharp teeth, Onitakemaru, a former pirate whom Kuuchi once tried to suppress, helps steer the ship to safer waters.
The ragtag group come within sight of their destination, Tsushima Island, where they are welcomed by no less than the Island Ruler's daughter, Princess Teruhi of the Sou Clan. That evening, the prisoners enjoy a feast prepared by their host. Princess Teruhi soon arrives with her servants and reveals her real motive in welcoming the prisoners to her island: she wants them to fight the Mongols who are posed to invade Japan. When the men protest, Princess Teruhi does not hesitate to give the order to kill all dissenters.
Later, in her private chambers, it is revealed that Princess Teruhi is just putting up an act out of duty to defend her island. That same evening, an advance party of skilled warriors secretly attack Princess Teruhi's camp and kidnaps her. The Sou Clan immediately mobilize their soldiers, including the ones guarding the prisoners, drawing a comment from Kuuchi how disorganized they are. The prisoners easily escape and quickly deduce where Princess Teruhi has been taken.
The Sou Clan soldiers catch up to the advance party but are unable to do anything for fear of hurting the princess. Onitakemaru arrives and starts attacking. Kuuchi also slips through and kills several of the advance party. His fighting style is revealed to be Gikei, the style used by Yoshitsune. However, the advance party's leader appears to be schooled in the same style and holds his own against Kuuchi. As the fight continues, the warriors come to a draw and the leader shows his face to Kuuchi. Much to Kuuchi's shock, he is no Mongol. The warrior escapes back to his ship and sets sail for the far seas while Kuuchi and the rest of the prisoners watch on. Unbeknownst to them, a trio of shadowy figures are watching over them.
The next morning, Princess Teruhi mourns her dead servant and the soldiers of the Sou Clan. Thinking that it is one of her servants who approach her, she comments that war is sad. But it is Kuuchi and he says only that what happened last night was not a war. He is disdainful of her seeming ignorance and wonders if she has the stomach to fight off the Mongols. Princess Teruhi surprises him however of her determination to protect her island. Just then, another of Princess Teruhi's servants, Kano, to warn that the Mongols are coming.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

Wooh, historical anime! I like it so far. I don't know how accurate it is or whether the characters are based on real people. But it is true that the Mongols did try to invade Japan but were unsuccessful. It is a very interesting setting and one that has not been done before as far as I know. The characters are interesting. Kuuchi seems like a good main character -- charismatic and appropriately broody but not annoyingly so. Teruhi, despite being a damsel in distress in this episode, is not annoying either. The music is also good. I like the opening theme. The animation is not so bad. The filter is a bit weird and could take some getting used to, but I don't mind it very much. I like this anime. Will definitely watch.jutehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15890710392689679933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4719097153967321862.post-83568746699012416292018-07-12T20:34:00.002+08:002018-07-12T20:34:37.835+08:00FLCL Progressive Episode 2

Hidomi dreams of decomposing bodies in an apocalyptic world. The bodies attack and eat each other. Hidomi appears as one of the zombies and she joins the fray but gets eaten in the process. As she lays there dying, a body shuffles toward her and she looks up to find that it is a zombified Ide. Hidomi wakes up and starts getting ready for school. In school, Haruko continues her antics and everyone seems to have gone gaga over her. Only Hidomi seems to be immune. Later, after class, Haruko persuades Hidomi to bring some notes to Ide, who is absent from class that day. After a while, Hidomi takes the piece of paper and makes her way to Ide's home.
It turns out Ide lives in a decrepit part of town. While there, she is propositioned by an old man, who is a regular customer at her mother's cafe. She is saved by one of Ide's friends who takes her to where Ide is. He explains that although Ide acts like he has no problem in school, in reality Ide is hard up and has to do hard manual labor to support himself.
At the sight of Ide being bloodied from the beatings, Hidomi faints. Ide notices her then and carries her back to his place, leaving his disgruntled friend behind.
At that point, Jinyu appears outside Ide's window. With her car, which has turned into a robot, she grabs Hidomi. Haruko comes out and uses Ide as a weapon to attack Jinyu. While the two women fight, Jinyu reveals to Haruko that Jinyu is just a part of her. But Haruko barely listens to her as she continues to attack with Ide in tow. Seeing Ide in danger triggers Hidomi and her headphones start to glow red. The red horn comes out of her forehead and she starts to float. There is an explosion and Haruko finds herself staring straight at a tiny raggedy doll.
Haruko tries to befriend the doll but the doll just explodes, sending a shocked Haruko, with Ide, into the sky. The doll then zips by and knocks Haruko on the head. Then the doll disappears and Hidomi's red horn pops open, bleeding all over her face. Jinyu caught Hidomi and picked up an unconscious Ide. She put both of them inside her car, which transforms into a medical lab. Ide wakes up then and Hidomi gives her his assignment. At this, Ide laughs and Hidomi smiles.
Banana Fish Episode 1

During the Vietnam War, US soldier Griffin starts shooting his own squadron before he is stopped by his friend, Max. Griffin collapses and utters the words "banana fish." In New York City, young gang leader Ash Lynx encounters a dying man who gives him a mysterious substance and an address before uttering his last words "banana fish." The next day, Ash goes to visit Dino, the mafia boss with whom Ash has a complicated past. Dino figures out that Ash has the substance and knows about "banana fish" and sets about stopping Ash from finding out more. Meanwhile a Japanese photojournalist, Shunichi Ibe, and his assistant, Eiji Okumura, arrive in New York to do a magazine piece of the local gangs. This brings them right up Ash's alley, whom they interview. Unfortunately, Ash's rival, Arthur, in connivance with Marvin, Dino's right-hand man, chooses this moment to attack Ash. They go after Skip, an African-American kid who is a member of Ash's gang, but end up kidnapping both Skip and Eiji.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
Okay. The premise of a 17-year-old gang leader acting like a li'l shit around a Mafia boss is a bit preposterous. But I'll let that slide. I am drawn in by the good visuals and the series' brand. It's supposed to be really good, but the plot isn't really doing it for me. I mean, I'm no stranger to gangster media and the stories there were so intricate, Banana Fish seems tralala in contrast, but like I said, I'll give this a try. This is supposed to have queer content so I'm there for that.

Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro Episode 1

Chio-chan has been up all night, playing a game of assassins. This causes her to wake up late and then to fall asleep outside the house on her way out for school. This in turn leads to her running late for school. She doesn't want to be late as her school tends to shame late-comers by making them line up with the school's delinquents. But Chio-chan has an idea: if she can just take the usual route to school, she can still make it before first class. Unfortunately, the road is closed due to construction going on. In a stroke of brilliance, Chio-chan applies what she learned from her videogames and climbs up a pole onto a neighbor's roof and takes the "high" way -- literally. After several close calls, involving an old man brushing his teeth and a snob in an armani suit, Chio-chan just barely makes it to class. The next day, Chio-chan decides to leave for school early, only to encounter Hisokawa, a popular girl in school. Chio-chan gets social anxiety and accidentally dives head first into a pile of garbage to avoid being embarrassed by greeting back Hisokawa by mistake. She and Hisokawa end up walking together to school anyway, with Chio-chan agonizing over what to say. When Hisokawa's friends show up, Chio-chan takes this chance to disappear to a nearby bathroom where she waits until Hisokawa and friends leave. But when she comes out, Hisokawa is still there waiting for her, forcing Chio-chan to accept that Hisokawa is truly a nice person.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
My god that was hard to summarize. I enjoyed this anime. The opening sequence made me laugh out loud and Chio-chan's antics are truly hilarious. I absolutely do not regret watching this show.

Satsuriku no Tenshi Episode 1

Rachel is a patient in a hospital, being treated by a doctor named Danny. She wakes up to find herself alone and unable to remember anything but that she was being treated in a hospital. When she steps out of the room she was in, she finds that she wasn't in a hospital. She soon finds a room with a typewriter, which starts typing questions for her to answer. After she answers all the questions, a door opens, which leads to an elevator. Rachel gets on and a voice through the PA system announces that a sacrifice has been made. The elevator goes up and stops at Basement Level 6. Rachel gets off and starts walking around. She soon finds out that she's not alone on that floor as a man, covered in bandages and carrying a large scythe, starts chasing her. Rachel gets back on the elevator and moves up to Basement Level 5. Here, she encounters Dr. Danny who appears normal at first before progressively becoming creepy as he keeps referencing Rachel's beautiful eyes. It soon becomes apparent that this Dr. Danny is unhinged. He harasses Rachel and tells her that her parents are in hell. This causes Rachel to go into a shocked state, which delights Dr. Danny, remarking on her eyes once more. He is interrupted however by the masked man who stabs him with his scythe. The masked man then tries to attack Rachel but is disappointed to find that she is not even moving. The voice on the PA system announces that a resident from B6 has just killed another resident from B5 and that he must be turned into a sacrifice. The masked man takes no heed of this and tries to use the elevator. Rachel soon recovers and follows the man to the elevator.

"There is nothing I want to be. There is nothing I want to do. All that exists is zero." Hidomi dreams of an apocalyptic landscape where her body is rotting and strange entities (the shape of a flat iron) are trying to attack her. Her body transforms into a giant mecha but as she prepares to fight them off, she wakes up. On her way down for breakfast, her mom cheerfully greets her by pointing a knife at her throat and insisting that she say 'good morning.' Hidomi makes no response whatsoever and her mom dismisses the attitude as simply her "tsundere" persona.

Later, on her way to school, Hidomi is unaware that she's being spied on by a strange woman on a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible. In school, Ide is wowing his two friends with his exploits from the past night with a teacher. However, when Hidomi comes in, Ide switches topics, settling on the fact that one of his friends has chosen to wear a skirt to school. Said friend defends his choice, by saying that fashion has no gender. Ide takes this in stride but adds that his friend should stop showing him his underwear. Said friend again calls him out for looking at his 'panties,' which Ide corrects as 'briefs.' This sparks a debate that end up on the fact that Ide can't help looking at underwear when they're in his light of sight. Their conversation is interrupted when their teacher enters the classroom.

The teacher begins talking in monotone about philosophy which is definitely non-standard, which confuses the kids. Later, she makes Hidomi watch porn on her laptop and is frustrated to find that Hidomi makes no reaction whatsoever. She dismisses Hidomi and Ide volunteers to go next but the teacher says that she does not need to test his reaction. Another student is called instead.

After school, Hidomi helps her mom out at the family cafe, where her tsundere personality is a hit among the customers. As they were closing, Hidomi's mom reminisces about her old hometown, which also had a similar monument shaped like a flat iron, and brings up her absentee husband. For the first time, Hidomi reacts, but before she can say anything, the woman from before speeds over and rams Hidomi with her car.

Then the woman hops out and declares to a horrified Hidomi's mother that Hidomi will unfortunately live. The woman takes off Hidomi's headphones and remarks that it is not even playing anything. Hidomi, who has by this time recovered, demands the headphones back, again exhibiting a reaction she has never exhibited before. The woman tells her that she only uses the headphones to tune out the rest of the world. Then she hops back into the car and leaves, but not before warning Hidomi about a woman in a vespa.

That night, Hidomi is attacked in her bedroom by a giant mechanical robot. Hidomi runs through the streets, being chased by this robot. All the while, she is being observed by the woman in the car. The robot soon catches up to Hidomi when suddenly, Ide appears. Ide reveals that the robot may have come out of his head. Both of them run away together, ending up in a junkyard, which reminds Hidomi of her apocalyptic dream. The robot chases them here but as the robot attacks, Ide tries to protect Hidomi, getting hurt in the process. As the robot approaches Hidomi, a strange light suddenly emits from her forehead. Unknown to them, another woman (Haruha) is observing the scene through a telescope. Before Hidomi could transform, the woman in the car appears and smashes her electric guitar at the robot, killing it.

The woman carries Ide, saying that she will take care of his wounds. Before she leaves however, she remarks that she likes Hidomi's new look. Puzzled, Hidomi walks over to a mirror and sees that a single red horn, just like in her dream, has grown out of her forehead.

The next morning, Hidomi finds that the woman, who introduces herself as Jinyu, is now working as a housemaid for her mom as compensation for running over Hidomi the other day. In school, Ide is being grilled by his friends because of the bandages he's wearing. When Hidomi enters, they exchange a look but don't say anything to each other. The teacher soon arrives and speaks in the same monotone about non-standard topics. Hidomi is hanging out in a chatroom on her phone where one of the chatters makes a typo, typing "fooly" instead of "folly." Then someone says "fooly cooly" and suddenly, the title of the series is born "FLCL."

Meanwhile, it seems the teacher has finally gone over the edge and her students go berserk. Then right in front of the entire class, the teacher takes off her face to reveal that she was Haruko all along.
COMMENTS:

I've seen the original FLCL and though I don't remember much of it I still remember distinctly enjoying the series. It's all so vague though that I might as well have nothing to compare Progressive to. So, in a way, this is a first impression of the series.

First up, the music is nuts. I love the opening theme which plays over Hidomi's dream sequence. The Pillows' "Thank you, my twilight" is so catchy and that the anime uses it as Hidomi's ringtone is kinda perfect. Now, I want it as my ringtone.

The story seems to be a retread of the original FLCL, but it's a bit more..."grown-up" somehow, for lack of a better word. A lot less boisterous, for instance. Jinyu seems a little too serious. Hidomi, a lot more understated and closed-off. And the violence feels perfunctory.

I enjoyed it. Make no mistake. But we'll see. Perhaps I need to revisit the old series again just to get my bearings.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4719097153967321862.post-73900263404013541602018-06-26T21:48:00.000+08:002018-07-07T16:25:02.571+08:00Top 10 Summer 2018 Anime SelectionsI know, I know. It's been so long. Where have I been? What have I been doing? Have I given up on anime? To be perfectly honest, I haven't been watching anime. Trying to get back to it, trying to get back to it, I fail. I do miss it sometimes. I had some free time today and I thought about checking out the new shows on line-up for Summer 2018. The ones below are the top 10 titles I'm interested in.

Due to Fr. Joseph's final words, Roberto and Josef break into Fr. Michael Brown's room to get some answers. There, they find that the priests of Santo Rosario Church have preserved Fr. Michael's corpse and were apparently venerating it as a saint. Along with Fr. Michael's perfectly preserved corpse, the two also find an ancient relic: a piece of a lance that looked exactly like the Holy Lance relic stolen from the British Museum; as well as a copy of the Devil's book. Roberto goes through Fr. Michael's book collection and finds one that is written in runes -- the same ones he found at the murder scene of Fr. Klaus. Just then, Josef discovers a hidden compartment in a cabinet containing the other half of the tally counter given to Roberto earlier by the Vatican. Paired together, the tally counter reads as "Heinrich."

Josef gets Lauren di Luca, his hacker partner, to find out about "Heinrich" from the Vatican Bank's client list. Meanwhile, the hospital finds out that Sister Anna Dolores has disappeared from her room. The incident leads Fr. Johannes to introduce Roberto and Joseph to Fr. McGee. Fr. Johannes apologizes for the late introduction, saying that Fr. McGee has been locked up doing genetic research for the hospital. But introductions are interrupted when they are alerted to a demonic possession of student, Carlos Diego, prompting Roberto and Josef to prepare for exorcism. During the ritual, Josef deduces that Carlos Diego is not possessed but suffering from a psychotic break due to drug overdose. After Carlos recovers, he tearfully reveals that Fr. Klaus had been sexually abusing him and giving him drugs to keep him contained.

Because everything that happened, Roberto and Josef decide to cover up the sexual abuse and instead say that the exorcism was a success. Meanwhile, Roberto deduced something himself: the guard apparently has vision problems, which leads Roberto to conclude that Mario Lotte was not levitating but was actually strangled and held up in mid-air by his attacker. The stigmata was just a physical manifestation of extreme pain and fear from being attacked. Since Fr. Johannes confirmed the guard's account, they both deduce that Fr. Johannes is lying and is probably working with the killer. Roberto reads from the Devil's book where it is prophesied that in the battle between God and Satan, Satan will plant his seed in a pure woman and his son will save the world. Josef deduces that Sister Anna Dolores' immaculate conception will fulfill that prophesy.

The next day, Roberto and Josef encounter a strange woman in the church grounds. The woman is out of her mind and shows them her baby: a two-headed ragdoll. She recounts to them how she conceived the child in a ritual involving an upside down pentagram and candles as well as the presence of Fr. Josef, Fr. Klaus, Leon and Fr. Johannes. She reveals that her father, Michael Brown, came down to earth onboard an ark and that he was very happy when she conceived the baby whom he declares is Lord Janus' child. A priest from the hospital soon arrives and calls her "Mary." Two orderlies escort her back to the hospital while the priest explains that Mary has schizophrenia and is Michael Brown's adopted daughter. The priest reveals that Mary had given birth to a child with severe deformities that died shortly after but her other baby appeared to have survived.

Later, Josef reveals to Roberto what he has figured out from Mary's story: that Michael Brown may have been one of the Nazi members who escaped to South America after the war. With this, they surmise that Sto. Rosario Church may be helping Nazi members hide. This is later confirmed by Lauren who connects Heinrich with the Heinrich Social Welfare Organization which ostensibly gives aid to refugees in war-torn areas but in reality deals in insider trading, using the Vatican Bank as a front. Roberto then states that the Nazis love to use runes but that he cannot read the runes in the murder room because they are written in code. So Josef brings him to spy on some students holding a seance, surmising that they can figure out the runes from the students' ouija board. But the guard breaks up the seance and Josef and Roberto find themselves being attacked by a man in a skull mask.
Sengoku assigns 2 instructors to teach Fujita the basic dance moves: Karen Banba and Tomochika Jinbo. Sengoku commissions them because as trainees they don't get paid but Fujita proves to be a bad student. Fujita however takes heart when Shizuku wishes him luck.
Meanwhile, it's revealed that Shizuku is competing at the Semi-Finals Amateur Dance Competition and Sengoku announces that he's going to see it. Naturally, Fujita goes too, along with Karen and Jinbo. There, Sengoku gets fawned over by some girls who recognize him as the Latin Dance Champion. Fujita sees Shizuku's dance partner, Kiyoharu Hyodo for the first time and feels intimidated by the boy's aura. It turns out however that Kiyoharu is the same age as Fujita. Kiyoharo and Shizuku wins the Semi-Finals round, but Sengoku is annoyed at how bored Kiyoharu looks after accepting his award.
The next day, Fujita is still reeling from the previous night's exciting competition and mooning over Shizuku when he encounters Kiyoharu, who looks quite different out of costume. Kiyoharu is tehre at Shizuku's behest to give Fujita Kiyoharu's last year's dance pants. The pants however need some hemming. After a demonstration of what Fujita learned over the past week under Karen and Jinbo's tutelage, Sengoku decides to let Fujita observe and follow Kiyoharu's moves. It turns out that Fujita is better at imitating moves than at taking actual dance instructions. He is even able to follow Kiyoharu's excellent footwork and Sengoku wastes no time rubbing this in Kiyoharu's face. Kiyoharu, however, remains unfazed.
In school, Fujita is thrilled to find that Shizuku is waiting for him at the locker room, but she's only there to tell him that they are finished hemming his pants. The two of them go to Kiyoharu's place and along the way Shizuku explains that she and Kiyoharu have been dance partners since they were 5 years old. Shizuku also says that on the night of the semi-final round, Kiyoharu had a fever and yet he still danced at an excellent level. Shizuku reveals her plans to go abroad to train but that Kiyoharu is not interested in that. While Shizuku goes to get the dance pants, Fujita secretly observes Kiyoharu rehearsing. To his surprise, he sees an image of Shizuku dancing with Kiyoharu. Shizuku explains that some dancers are so attuned to their partners that even when they are dancing by themselves, it still seems like they're dancing with their partner. At the studio the next day, Fujita rehearses the basic waltz and Sengoku is surprised to see that he is dancing with Shizuku in mind as his partner.
COMMENTS:
In this episode, we see some hilarious faces made by the characters. Fujita especially but Kiyoharu got the most laugh from me when he made the "scary yawn" at Fujita.

I'm still enjoying the show. The style can be quite extreme (distorted faces, contorted bodies to the point that they are almost grotesque) but most of the time the images are tame and when it's tame it can be beautiful. Especially the close ups. Long shots are a bit touchy though because you can see how little they pay attention to the character details. Characters and proportion look weird in long shots.

I think it could use a little more movement in the dance sequences but I guess that would take too much from the budget. The production value is quite high already.

Anyway, in this episode, we see Kiyoharu established as the genius. Like if Fujita is Sakuragi then Kiyoharu is Roukawa. I get that vibe between them. Or, if you wanna refer to more recent anime, then Fujita is Naruto and Kiyoharu is Sasuke. I think it's a common trope in anime and always, always, there's the girl in between. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I hope this show does not fall into a box.

The scene opens with a man running while a distended voice asks why they have not repented. The man kneels in front of a fiery creature with three heads and three eyes with the symbol 666 and claims "they" are coming back to him. But the creature declares that they will bathed in blood.

Roberto and Josef are testing "Mary's tears" and find that it's only water. They conclude that the "tears" are simply condensation. But when they present their conclusion to Fr. Joseph Conotri, they insist that it is a miracle. In the course of their investigation, the two are introduced to Leon Russell, the layman Head of the Secretariat of Santo Rosario Church. Leon Russel tells them that the recently deceased Fr. Klaus Beck, Fr. Joseph, Leon Russel and his wife lost their parents in World War II. As orphans, they were taken in by Fr. Michael Brown, the church founder. Out of gratitude for the man, the priests have preserved Fr. Michael's room since he died and Fr. Joseph becomes incensed when Roberto suggests looking at Fr. Michael's collection of rare books.

Meanwhile, two students, Mario Lotte and Sebastian Franklin, discuss a classmate, Carlos Diego, who seems to have reacted badly to the strange occurrences in Santo Rosario, including the gruesome murder of Fr. Klaus. It is revealed that the priests have not told the student body the truth about Fr. Klaus' passing. But the students are clearly involved in the satanic symbols found on the floors and hold seances as well. Later that night, Fr. Franceso secretly meets with Sister Dorothea in her room. Soon after, Roberto and Josef are called to an emergency: Fr. Francesco and Sister Dorothea have become the latest victims of the Santo Rosario murderer. At the sight of both bodies, Roberto and Josef figure out that the victims have all been killed in the same manner as the martyrs depicted on Santo Rosario's stained-glass windows.
This latest event leads the priests to gather the students where Mario Lotte makes a spectacle of himself by displaying stigmata. The priests call the police but heavy rains keep them from crossing the bridge to Santo Rosario, forcing them to wait until morning. Meanwhile, Roberto and Josef interview the guard, which leads the two to investigate the room where the first miracle occurred. They find a cross formed by ruins written in blood as well as bloodied footprints, suggesting that the murderer was in the room when Fr. Klaus died. Josef deduces that Fr. Klaus was killed by the murderer pushing the Virgin Mary statue, crushing Fr. Klaus, which also explains the "crying Mary" miracle: the murderer cleaned the murder weapon with the ice cold water from the fountain and returned it to its pedestal. The freezing statue then reacted to the air, thus, creating condensation or "tears." During dinner, the priests discover that Fr. Joseph is absent. They quickly hurry to his room where they find him tied upside down on an X-shaped cross like St. Andrew.
COMMENTS:

Well, that was not a boring episode. Seems like the show has no qualms about killing off random characters. In this episode alone, 3 people died. Granted, they had no personalities but still. That was almost Game of Thrones-like. I'm still not bought on the show. The mysteries are okay I guess but so. much. talking. The visuals aren't great either. Needs more panache to keep me sticking to it.

Two sword warriors, Kane and Kunihiro, are chasing after a fast-moving carriage, guarded by flying wraiths and a sword-wielding warrior. They succeed in killing all of them and retrieve the cargo -- chests full of gold coins. It is then revealed that they are warriors sent from the future by a sage called Saniwa in order to stop the Retrograde Army from changing history.

At that moment, a cat-like figure announces to them their new mission from Saniwa: they are to stop the Retrograde Army from changing the course of history on March 6 during the reign of the 14th Shogun. The two travel to Tokyo and there they are able to narrow down the area where the Retrograde Army will appear and their possible target.

On their first night in the city, they encounter elements of the Retrograde Army. Kane dispatches of his assailants while Kunihiro holds his own against a lone attacker. However, he lets his guard down, prompting Kane to save him in the nick of time. Later that evening, Kunihiro is awakened by fire consuming the city. Kunihiro wants to save the residents but Kane stops him, saying they cannot interfere and risk changing history. However later Kane saves a child who is trapped in the fire.
More members of the Retrograde Army appear, heavily outnumbering Kane and Kunihiro. But Saniwa arrives just in time, bringing with him some reinforcements in the form of additional sword warriors: Tonbokiri, Mutsunokami and Yagen.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

Production values look high and the art style is pretty. Kane, especially, has such a pretty design. So apparently, most of the characters are not actual people but swords -- legendary swords from Japan's history. About the only real person in the show so far is Saniwa and he's a mage or summoner.

Anyway, not sure about the villain's target right now. I'm sure it's one of those three guys that the cat character named and our heroes are going to try to stop them.

Will I stick around and watch the other episodes? Not sure. If nothing better comes along, I'll probably blog about this.

The series opens with a monologue. A man with his arms wrapped around a glowing orb, sleeping, when a woman with blonde hair walks up to him and tells him to "wake." The man opens his eyes and it turns out he's a dragon. The scene shifts to a battle scene between a monster army and disciplined human forces with the ability to use magic. The battle becomes that between two swordsmen with magical powers.
In yet another scene shift, the mage Sisigou is summoned to the office of Rocco Belfeban. Rocco wants to hire Sisigou as a master of Red in the Great Holy Grail War orchestrated by Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia, the leader of the Yggdmillenia group who took the Holy Grail during the recent Holy Grail War. The Great Holy Grail War is apparently a battle between the two factions, Red and Black, and requires each faction to have 7 masters -- or 14 masters all in all, each with their own heroic servant. Rocco bestows Sisigou a relic of the Arthurian Round Table in order to allow him to summon a hero from the Arthurian Legend.
Rocco informs Sisigou who the other masters of Red are: Jean Rum, Rottweil Berzinsky, Feend vor Sembren, the Pentel brothers and a priest known only as Shirou. Sisigou later summons the servant, Mordred, the one true heir of Arturia Pendragon.
Tatara Fujita is a junior high student who does not have any plans for the future. One day, after yet another fruitless talk with his adviser regarding his plans after high school, he accidentally overhears a teacher talk with another student, who likewise does not seem to have any plans for the future. On his way home from school, he is accosted by a group of bullies from school but is saved from the encounter by a tall dude on a motorcycle. The dude introduces himself as Kaname Sengoku, a pro competitive dancer who works as an instructor for a newly opened dance studio. At said dance studio, Fujita meets Shizuku, the same student whom he thought was just like him. But she turns out to be a talented amateur competitive dancer.
Sengoku and his female friend, Tamaki, who helps run the studio for him, invite Fujita to attend their dance classes. That evening, Fujita watches some videos of a dance competition which Sengoku won. The sight of all the dancers inspires something in Fujita so that the next day, he impulsively signs up for dance classes. He blurts out that he wants to be a pro just like Sengoku, which piques the man enough to begin teaching him The Box, telling him to keep on it until he tells him to stop. Fujita takes him literally at his word and practices the movement all through the night.
The next day, Shizuku finds him still practicing and tries to partner with him. Fujita, however, becomes too embarrassed and literally wilts in front of her. The resulting commotion wakes Sengoku up, leading to his discovery that Fujita has been there since yesterday, practicing. After telling him to stop, Fujita excitedly wonders if Sengoku is going to teach him another movement.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

Well, first off, I think someone from the art and design team of One Piece is on board. The art style is similar. Second, I like it. The subject matter is not unusual but the setting and the background is definitely something new. I know that the trend in anime these days seem to deal with sports with the most recent one being ice skating. I think there's even a gymnastics one this season. I don't know why this is so or whether it has anything to do with the coming Tokyo Olympics. But it's a nice change of pace.

Fujita is a typical aimless teenager who has a chance encounter which leads to him making unexpected choices. Pretty straightforward plot. There's even the interesting girl who provides a romantic subplot as well as opens the way for the boy to consider another way of life. Not sure about the other characters. Sengoku seems like an atypical mentor figure with his issues. Tamaki is a blank slate as of now. Curious to know what her relationship to Sengoku is.

All in all, a good start.

Roberto Nicholas and Hiraga Josef Kou are Vatican Miracle Examiners who are called to investigate a reported miracle at a small church in South America. The miracle consisted of a nun who claims to be having an immaculate conception. However, Roberto and Hiraga's superior also tells them to watch out for a satanic cult that may be forming in the same church.

Roberto and Hiraga travel to South America. There they find out that the church also has an attached dormitory for a boys' school as well as a state-of-the-art hospital. When they go see the nun at the hospital, they are surprised to find that she is manifesting stigmata. Medical examination shows that she is indeed pregnant but doesn't look to have had intercourse. She also seems to believe that she is having immaculate conception, which the church tried to hide at first but she herself wrote that letter to the Vatican.

Later at dinner, Roberto and Hiraga meet the rest of the church's priests and nuns. Something weird is definitely going on as though the church is hiding something. Hiraga examines the church's financial documents and finds out that the church is making far too much money for its size. They also interview the church's security guard who has seen something strange but he keeps silence in the face of the church's Father Klaus Beck. The next day, Roberto and Hiraga find themselves witness to another miracle: The statue of the Virgin Mary is crying.
Seems like a pretty straightforward mystery. I'm not particularly drawn to it but maybe it will get better in later episodes as more are revealed. The art style, which looked good in pictures, doesn't translate too well in animation. A satanic cult behind a seemingly peaceful small but prosperous church. An evil nun. An innocent pregnant one who thinks she's having the immaculate conception. And secretive priests. It all sounds a bit too cliche. And I'm not sold on any single detail. The opening and the ending themes are nothing to write home about. Even the main characters, Roberto Nicholas (who is probably a little gay) and Hiraga Josef Kou are pieces of cardboard. Nothing leaps out. So I don't know if I can bother to watch 2 more episodes.

Welcome to Daikoku City, a half-internet, half-shrine city where Yasako and her family has just moved in to live closer to Yasako's grandmother. Almost as soon as they arrive by train, Yasako and her younger sister, Kyoko, encounter a strange black creature that Yasako's pet, Densuke, then chases into a black hole. The hole disappears, along with Densuke!

And so begins our introduction into the strange world of Denno Coil.

First of all, god I forgot how good the opening and ending songs are in this anime. I love how haunting and almost horror-like the intro to Prism is before it transitions to something lighter but nostalgic. The ending theme is just as exquisite and definitely bittersweet now that I know how the series ends.

About a year ago, Pokemon Go took the world by storm. Although we've not quite yet reached the Augmented Reality (AR) world that Daikoku City features, we're so close. This anime shows us the wonderful possibilities of AR, especially for kids for whom the world is a virtual playground in quite the literal sense. But behind all the fun and games also lurk danger.

This show follows the adventures of a group of kids who use AR glasses as they investigate and explore their AR city and in the process find pieces of themselves and what the future brings. It's fun, heartwarming and quite literally hits you in the feels when it does.

I'm re-watching this and will be blogging about it as I do.jutehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15890710392689679933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4719097153967321862.post-57890122019006972282017-06-17T18:47:00.000+08:002017-06-17T18:47:39.411+08:002017 Summer Anime Part 2So a while ago, I posted the new anime shows I'm thinking of watching. On second view at this year's summer anime line up, I've decided to add a couple more titles that have piqued my interest:

KATSUGEKI / TOUKEN RANBU

The story is set in 1863 Japan nearing the end of the samurai era. Japan is divided into two factions: the pro-shogunate and anti-shogunate. Some historical revisionists from the future travel back in time to try to alter the course of history, leading a sage to bring to life two sword spirits who rush preserve the real history of Japan.

The characters look really cool and I'm just really interested in samurai. So here's to hoping this one delivers.

FATE/APOCRYPHA

I've seen neither Fate/Stay night nor Fate/Zero series, so this franchise is totally new to me. But a look at the seiyuu cast made me want to give this a try. Maaya Sakamoto, Miyuki Sawashiro, ah yes.

The plot sounds very convoluted though. Joan of Arc and 2 factions and 7 servants. Art looks cool though.

3-episode rule, amirite?

MOVIES:

1. Kimi no Koe wo Todoketai - this is by Madhouse and the plot, though different, for some reason reminds me of Summer Wars

2. Mary to Majo no Hana - the girl looks so much like Ponyo that I was surprised to find out that it's not by Studio Ghibli

jutehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15890710392689679933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4719097153967321862.post-14264638676685965502017-05-12T21:46:00.000+08:002017-05-12T21:46:16.513+08:002017 Summer AnimeYooooooo!!!!

It's been a while. So I've been very busy with work and haven't really been watching much anime. I did try to watch Aijin a while back because it was available on Netflix, but I sort of drifted off it. These days, I'm just watching Shingeki no Kyoujin's second season, which is excellent though a bit dragging and too full of cliff-hangers....

Anywhoo, I'm posting 'coz I had a change to check out this Summer's anime line up and there are a few interesting titles. Here's the run-down of new anime I think I might check out:

Ballroom e Youkoso

Also known as Welcome to the Ballroom, this is based on the manga series of the same name. It's the story of a boy, Tatara Fujita, who one day found himself attached by a gang but was saved by a ballroom instructor. This chance encounter led him to explore the entirely different and intense world of competitive dancing.

The show is by Production I.G. so I'm expecting high production values. I'm also looking forward to the OST BGM.

Netsuzou TRap

This is a yuri anime based on a manga of the same name. The title is apparently abbreviated to NTR. Don't ask. This is the story of best friends Yuma and Hotaru. When Yuma gets a boyfriend, she runs to Hotaru for advice and the two end up having a "try-out kiss" that turns heated.

Hoookaaayyyy. I have to admit I googled this and the manga covers are kinda racy. I thought at first they were doujinshi but yep they're the real deal.

The Reflection

This is a collaboration between Stan Lee - yes, that Stan Lee - and Studio DEEN. I don't really know what it's about but we all know it's about superheroes. This is Studio DEEN's synopsis:

After THE REFLECTION, some of the people in all parts of the world are discovered with super powers.
Some become heroes, and others villains.
How did The Reflection happen? What was the cause of it? With so many unsolved mysteries, the world is lead into turmoil.

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan

The title means "Vatican Miracle Examiner" and it should give you a clue as to what it's about. This follows two men, Hiraga Josef Ko and Robert Nicholas, who are members of the Vatican's "Assembly of Saints," an elite group dedicated to investigating alleged miracles.

Sounds really interesting. This is based on a light novel, which gives it added gravitas. J.C. Staff runs it.

Karada Sagashi

This is horror anime based on a manga. No idea why they chose to air this now. They should have waited until Fall, but oh well. Creepo manga pictures from a Google search.

A red person asks Asuka to search for its body. Asuka and her friends must search for the scattered body parts. If they don't find the entire body, the 9th of November is repeated and the red person will kill them.

Well, shit.

That's all for now. There are a bunch of interesting movies out, too. Especially that one by Madhouse about "word spirits" and I think it's a romance. If you want to check out the rest, head on over to MAL for a more comprehensive list.
EPISODE 5: Beyond the Red Sky

At Todo's suggestion, Tekkadan enters into an agreement with Orcus Company to guide them en route to Earth. However, Orcus double-crosses Tekkadan and leaks the route to Coral, who then sends Gjallarhorn Grazes to ambush the group. The ambush informs Tekkadan about Todo's betrayal although Todo protests that a Gjallarhorn ambush was not part of the deal. In response to the threat, Orga puts in place his contingency plan, revealing that Mikazuki with his Gundam is on board. While Mikazuki engages the Gjallarhorn, killing Coral in the skirmish, Orcus tries to sink Tekkadan's shuttle. Akihiro arrives just then to lend fire power. Meanwhile, Gjallarhorn Specialist Majors Fareed and Bauduin are tipped off that Kudelia is aboard the Tekkadan ship. As they try to intercept it, their attention is drawn to Mikazuki's gundam. Fareed correctly identifies the unit as Barbatos and tries to attack its weak points. But Mikazuki notices and escapes through the Tekkadan ship before major damage is dealt. In the aftermath, Tekkadan celebrates their victory as they continue on their journey to earth while Gjallarhorn finds itself the recipient of a bound-up Todo on a shuttle.
EPISODE 6: As For Them

After their skirmish with Gjallarhorn, the Tekkadan crew occupy themselves during the downtime with repairs and other maintenance task. Kudelia explains her mission to Mikazuki and Atra while distributing lunches. In the course of their talk, Kudelia finds out that Mikazuki can't read or write so she volunteers to teach him. When other crew members hear her, they also volunteer to join her class. Meanwhile, with Orcus out of the picture, Orga and his group contemplate reaching out to Teiwaz, a conglomerate based in Jupiter sphere, to serve as their new guide to Earth. The task proves to be difficult when they realize that they need a middleman to negotiate the deal for them. Just then, Tekkadan receives a transmission from an angry Maruba Arkay, the president of CGS. On Fareed's ship, Ein asks Fareed to let him join the pursuit force.

President of the now-defunct CGS Maruba demands the return of his ship, the Will-O-the-Wisp, accusing Orca and his crew of theft. Maruba's ranting is interrupted by Naze Turbine of the Turbine group under Teiwaz, who reveals that his business relationship with Maruba and that he is there to collect CGS property. Biscuit tries to get Naze to support their bid for Teiwaz to guide them to Earth but Naze refuses and Orga draws a hard line with the "return" of property. The disagreement spurs both groups to prepare for battle. Mikazuki and Akihiro are deployed to handle the enemy mobile suits. Eugene pilots the Will-O-the-Wisp while Orga works out a plan to board the enemy ship in a daring maneuver. In the heat of battle, Maruba accidentally spills that Tekkadan's crew have Alaya-Vijnana System, causing Naze to put a halt to the battle and resume talks.
COMMENTS:

It's now seven episodes and the characters still aren't shaping too well. Kudelia is still irrelevant and the other Tekkadan crew are still interchangeable. But the one thing that's changed for me is understanding the relationship between Orga and Mikazuki better. I always found the uneven dynamic between the two rather unsettling ever since that episode where Mikazuki killed a CGS crew member for Orga. I did not like the idea of Mikazuki being used by Orga, an obviously older kid, as a weapon to do all his dirty work: fight battles for him, kill for him. It sends out the wrong message. But Episode 6 explains it a little for me and I'm satisfied for now.

EPISODE 7: Slashing Strike

A teacher stays late in school to clean up when she notices two kids playing with the chickens. After she scolds them and tells them to go home, one of the kids draw something on the ground. Suddenly, the earth moves and the teacher tells them to stay down because it was an earthquake. A few minutes later, the earth moves again in an aftershock. Just then, a large claw bursts out from underneath the ground, separating the two kids. As the other kid runs towards his friend, the teacher quickly tackles him, barely avoiding the claw to catch them. Sensing a threat, the chickens began to make a ruckus, attracting the creature towards the coop and prompting it to attack them. While the creature is distracted, the teacher and one of the kids find a higher surface to stand on. The teacher concludes that the creature is attracted by vibrations on soil. She tells the other kid not to move and asks the other to distract the creature by throwing rocks while she attempts to rescue the former. Her plan backfires but just before the creature could get her, the kid throws a piece of rock at a nearby trolley, causing the balls they contain to bounce on the ground.

Banba drives his geologist ex-girlfriend to the school where the creature from the previous episode was found. On their way there, they go through a tunnel, which suddenly collapses on them. When an injured Banba comes to, he can't find his ex anymore but he sees other motorists trapped inside the tunnel with him. He notices a woman inside her car and while he tries to get her attention, the woman is suddenly attacked by a gigantic tick that sucks out all her blood right in front of a horrified Banba. As the tick leaps away, Banba then notices other motorists dead on the ground with their blood sucked out. Banba searches through the wreckage for his ex-girlfriend and finally finds her sitting on the ground, conscious but unresponsive. He takes her hand and drags her out of the tunnel just as a jet bombs the place. The tunnel collapses in on what looks like Banba's ex. But when his vision clears, he sees that what he thought was his ex was actually the tongue of a huge creature and that part of the tunnel was the inside of this creature. Suddenly in the sky Banba sees a claw and he realizes that this creature is the same one that caused the earthquake.

CHAPTER 4: The Rainbow-Colored Past

The group makes a cursory examination of the director's corpse and Nishinosono makes the following observations: (1) his body is still warm, which means he hasn't been dead for long; (2) he is stabbed with a knife on the back of his neck, which means he didn't do it himself and that his killer is someone he knew; (3) the helicopter radio is destroyed, which means the police have not yet been contacted; (4) since there are only ways to get to the rooftop and they didn't meet anyone at the elevator, the killer must have used the other door and he must still be in the lab.

The group goes back to the main room where they check the security logs on the two doors leading to the rooftop. The logs reveal that only Yamane has used the elevator to the rooftop but the time does not match the timeline of the murder. The other door has not been accessed since yesterday. This leads them to conclude that the Deborah program is not entirely perfect. Next they examine Magata's room through Yamane's voice and palm biometric data. It is established that the door can be opened from the inside the same way using Magata's voice and palm biometric data. Once inside the room, they observe that Magata has a receiving room although she never sees anyone, her library does not contain a single work of hers and that she appears to have been working on metal.

As they explore the room further for more clues, they come upon a closed door that is locked from inside and someone with Magata's voice asks them who they are. Yamane immediately identifies himself and asks for the door to open. However, it revealed that the voice belongs to a robot that Magata made and named Michiru. The room also hides a large lego British guard, a box of legos, a teddy bear and three pieces of party balloons. Magata's bedroom appears neat as though nothing horrible happened in it. They find nothing there, not even Magata's limbs, which makes Saikawa wonder about a trash chute in the room. However, the chute turns out to be too small.

Next, they check Magata's desktop computer and they find out that Magata has designed a new platform, Red Magic ver. 6 when the lab is still using ver. 4. An entry on her calendar from the day before contains the mysterious phrase: "Everything becomes F." They also find a text file that contains what apparently are the last words of Magata and her other personalities.

Later, Nishinosono and Saikawa check out a room in Magata's apartment that contains the single window. Saikawa mulls over the meaning of "Everything becomes F" while Nishinosono wonders about the wedding dress that Magata's corpse is wearing. Although they find a sewing machine in Magata's room, the wedding dress was bought three years ago. The wedding dress leads to a talk about dolls, which reminds Nishinosono about Magata's saying that a doll murdered her parents. However, doll seems to represent Magata's personalities, Magata also revealed in her conversation with Nishinosono that Magata is the only one who knows about her parents, making her the only suspect in her parents' murder.

In a flashback, the director is revealed sitting in a hotel room with a drink in hand. He talks about hearing Magata alone in the bathroom, talking to one of her personalities. The persona appears to have already slept with the director and Magata is asking her advice on what she's going to do, which is to sleep with the director, too. When Magata finally steps out of the shower, the director tries to tell her to stop but Magata throws herself on him.
COMMENTS:

Alright so now we have two bodies and we're all assuming that the killer is one of these characters inside the lab. So far the characters that have been fleshed out are Yamane and the director's wife.

Yamane is implicated because, being the vice director, he is the one guy, save the director himself who is already dead, with the highest level of access in the lab. He is also the only person who used the door leading to the rooftop. As for motive, his being vice-director to a dead director is plenty of motive. Yet, our intrepid investigators do not seem to consider him a suspect. Perhaps, because Yamane has been with them from the moment they arrived at the lab and so on. He hasn't really left our investigor's side, which diverts suspicion from him.

Our next suspect is the director's wife. We don't know much about her except that she seems to be taking her husband's gruesome murder very well. She's baking cookies and exchanging gossip about Magata's multiple personality disorder. Her motive is of course that of an avenging wife who finds out that her husband has been cheating on her with a kid genius. But there seems to be no indication whatsoever that she knows about Magata's affair with the director. Besides she doesn't appear to be smart enough to be able to pull off such a murder.

As a subplot, we are also trying to solve the murder of Magata's parents fifteen years ago. Magata is the prime suspect but she cryptically told Nishinosono that a doll did it. Incidentally, the latest murders may also involve a doll, Michiru, who is one of Magata's personalities.

Some nitpicking about the show: it is a leap for Nishinosono to assume that the police were never contacted just because the radio is destroyed. There's no showing that the director didn't already make the call and then got murdered. Likewise, I don't remember how they end up concluding that Magata was murdered only a few minutes before the director's murder. Sure, it narrows down the timeline and is a plot device to ensure that the killer remains in the building. But if Magata has only been dead a few minutes or hours, why is Nishinosono covering her nose when she checks the corpse?

It appears that Magata is the person who designed Red Magic, the program that controls Deborah security system, and that she is able to freely move about the lab. Yet, somehow I had the impression that Magata is supposed to be a prisoner? What kind of prisoner has freedom to get in and out with her prison and tinker with prison's security?

EPISODE 4: Double Bow

A couple of kids are playing with a drone by the riverbank when their drone crashes into the water. The current carries it into a sewer which the two reluctantly enter. As they go deeper, they finally find their drone but it's resting on the back of a giant turtle-like creature. The creature chases them and they escape through a tiny passageway leading to the surface. The passageway, however, is blocked by a corpse. Trapped, the kids wait out the creature which passes right below them. One of the boys goes down to investigate only to be grabbed by something or someone -- Banba! He tells the boys to run away as the creature returns to attack them. Just when the creature almost gets them, someone shouts for them to jump into the water. Without thinking, Banba grabs the boys and they jump into the water. Men in white suits, black gloves and gas masks soon appear and incinerate the creature. When Banba and the boys surface, a man in a dapper suit holds out his hand to Banba. It turns out that the man works for a pharmaceutical company that is using these creatures for research. He wants to enlist Banba's help but Banba refuses to do so. Even though the creature died from the fire, the man is able to collect an egg from it.

In a small convenience store, a guy clocks off early to go on a date, leaving his co-worker behind to close up. While the co-worker who is left behind goes inside the office, a girl comes in and shoplifts. On her way out, the guy who left early comes back running as though he is being chased by a ghost. The "ghost" attacks him and as he flails around, the "ghost" finally appears. The creature, which looks like a chameleon and can blend into its environment, eats the guy, much to the horror of the girl and his co-worker. With the guy dead, the girl fears she's next. The co-worker signals her from the office but as she crawls toward him, the item she stole fell, drawing the creature to the noise. Before the creature could attack her, however, the co-worker throws something at the creature, distracting it. While the creature is distracted, they both run inside the office and lock the door. But the creature comes after them, breaking the door and forcing them to flee through the vent. Before the creature could get to them, the men in white suits, gas masks and black gloves rescue them and kills the creature.
EPISODE 6: Deep Abyss

While in a cruise through the South Pole, Banba recalls his meeting with the guy from the pharmaceutical company. The guy again tries to convince him to work for them but Banba says that he is not studying the creatures for money. Meanwhile, a submarine where a young couple just got engaged is attacked by an unknown creature from the depths of the ocean. A closer look reveals that it is a gigantic humanoid creature with fish-like features. It attacks the submarine as it tries to surface, sending out a powerful sonar that causes ice bergs to sink. The force causes the submarine to lose power, rendering it vulnerable to an attack from the creature which is fast approaching. Banba advises the young man to use the sonar in order to fool the creature that the submarine is one of its own. It is a gamble since pressing the sonar would use up the rest of the submarine's power. Nevertheless, the young man uses the sonar and the signal causes the creature to stop and sink back into the abyss.

I'm probably the only person in the world who is blogging this anime. LOL It's so bad, honestly. I don't even know why anymore, except that it's easy to watch and even easier to recap. Anyway, at least, in these last episodes, we get a semblance of a plot. The pharmaceutical company is obviously up to no good. Naturally, they want Banba to work for them and naturally Banba refuses. I can't say I'm looking forward to what comes next. I do like the design of the abyss creature. Its face reminds me of a blob fish.

Under Orga's orders with help from Old Man and Yamagi, Mikazuki pilots the Barbatos, the ancient gundam used during the Calamity War, and defends against the attacking Gjallarhorn Graze company. After one of their numbers is injured, the Gjallarhorn's commander, Crank, issues a retreat just in time for Barbatos to run out of thruster fuel and Mikazuki to lose consciousness from the shock to his nervous system. Although CGS successfully repels the attackers, they nevertheless suffer heavy casualties, especially among the Third Corps rank. However, when the First Corps return, their leader beats Orga for diverting Gjallarhorn forces on them. Orga takes the beating but plots with his comrades to overthrow the First Corps and take control of CGS for themselves. Meanwhile, Coral orders Crank to eliminate all traces of the attack and to seize Kudelia from CGS. Crank hesitates at first upon learning that he is fighting against child soldiers but reluctantly complies. Back on Mars, a girl named Atra, accompanied by two other girls Cookie and Cracker, from Sakura-chan's farm, arrive at the base with supplies. Kudelia helps them as they prepare dinner for the boys. Atra attempts to give a bracelet that matches her own to Mikazuki but the latter is too distracted with plans of mutiny by the Third Corps.

That evening, while the boys have their dinner, Biscuit and other Third Corps members serve food laced with sedatives to the First Corps. This allows Orga and his comrades to seize control without shedding more blood than necessary. However, Mikazuki does shoot the First Corps leader point-blank and another protesting First Corps member in payment for their desertion of the Third Corps. This scares the other First Corps members into submission. With CGS firmly under their control, Orga's next challenge is how to financially support themselves. They are informed that most of the company's savings are gone and they only have enough to support themselves for three months, which means they have to find work soon. Todo, an adult former member of CGS, suggests ransoming Kudelia to the Gjallarhorn and pinning it all on the CGS leader. While Orga appears to contemplate this plan, they are interrupted by the arrival of Crank. The latter issues a challenge to a duel with Mikazuki's Barbatos. Mikazuki accepts the challenge and, after an intense fight, disables Crank's Graze. Mikazuki then steps out of his gundam to speak with Crank, who asks to die. Without hesitation, Mikazuki draws out his gun and shoots Crank. After witnessing all that happened and knowing the financial status of the newly-named Tekkadan, Kudelia decides to continue with her mission to Earth and hires Tekkadan as her escort, thus, solving Orga's financial woes for the moment.

EPISODE 4: The Price of Life

Tekkadan plots a course to earth, avoiding Gjallarhorn routes. In order to accomplish this, they need a guide. The course would take them through an area of space used mainly by civilian companies. Todo volunteers to contact the civilian company, Orcus, claiming that he is good friends with the CEO. Meanwhile, Specialist Majors Fareed and Bauduin from the Gjallarhorn base on Earth, conduct their inspection of Coral's base. They discover that a company of Gjallarhorn forces (Crank's company) have been dispatched to Mars and has not returned. Coral excuses unconvincingly that the move was to suppress a riot. Meanwhile, Orga sends Dexter and former human debris (slave) Akihiro to formalize the name of the company from CGS to Tekkadan. While Tekkadan is busy arranging Kudelia's transport, the latter speaks with her sponsor who wires her the money for the mission. Mikazuki later invites her to Sakura-chan's farm where they have a little light fun helping Sakura-chan, Atra and the kids harvest corn. Not too far away, Fareed and Bauduin investigate the site of the recent battle. Fareed deduces that Coral had attempted to kill Kudelia in order to remain in good graces with Earth and, thus, not have to worry about Fareed and Bauduin's inspection report. Later, they run into Mikazuki's group at Sakura-chan's farm. Mikazuki attempts to strangle Bauduin for apparently running over Cookie and Cracker. But Sakura-chan stops him and Fareed makes peace with the girls by giving them candy. As Kudelia is about to join them, her secretary, Fumitan, leads her away to hide from Fareed and Bauduin. Back at the base, Orga shows to everyone Tekkadan's new logo: an iron flower.

Okay, I think I'm dropping this show. I don't like the art and the character designs. I don't like the characters. I don't like the implication that Orga is using Mikazuki as some sort of personal gunman, who kills and fights for him. Especially since I don't get why Mikazuki is so enamored with the dude. Also, if it was this easy to overthrow the adults, why didn't Orga never try this before?

I was mildly interested in this when I learned that it was animated by Madhouse. However, I was not attracted by its premise and thought other series were a better option. Fast forward to now, the series is well into its 6th episode and I keep hearing rave reviews about it. The other shows on my watchlist aren't panning out well. I already dropped Young Black Jack from the roster and I'm barely hanging on to Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. I need a show with a good hook and found that One Punch Man has got it in spades.

I'm sure everybody is already familiar with the premise. This is about a guy, Saitama, who is very strong but claims to be a hero only for fun. He lives in a city that appears to be constantly attacked by strange monsters, which Saitama quickly dispatches quickly -- with just a single punch! However, precisely because he's so strong that Saitama is bored. He's looking for a challenge. He finds an unlikely disciple in a hot-headed 19-year old cyborg instead.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

I love Saitama. I've never liked a single main character in a show, but Saitama is so average, he could be a background character. And that's the entire point of his character. Average guy living an average life in an average apartment, doing average things, except for one teeny, tiny detail: this guy happens to be a superhero. I can almost hear Miranda Priestly sardonically saying, "Flowers for spring? Groundbreaking."

But baby, believe me when I say this anime turns all the superhero tropes on its head. First of all, Saitama does not look at all heroic or cool. He's bald and, when he's not serious, he can look pretty spacey. This non-heroic look he has can't be any more clear when he stands next to the stereotypical cool anime guy, Genos, a cyborg that can shoot fire out of his hands. Very cool.

Second, although this is a shounen anime, unlike most shounen main characters, Saitama does not spend most of the series trying to become strong. Saitama, in fact, spends each episode looking for enemies strong enough to defeat him. This part reminds me of a wuxia character called Dugu-Seeking-A-Loss. Dugu, like Saitama, is so strong he spends his days looking for an opponent that can defeat him. Hence, his name. But where Dugu is a serious heroic type, Saitama couldn't care less about being a hero. As a matter of fact, he claims to be a hero only for fun and that it's a hobby.

The humor in the series is shown in the character designs of its characters. From Saitama's shiny bald head to villains dressed in ridiculous outfits. The way Saitama dispatches his opponents can be quite brutal and graphic but they are also riddled with comedy, you barely notice.

All in all, I like this show. I'm gonna blog about it. The fact that this is based on a webcomic also interests me as I am dabbling in a webcomic series myself.
EPISODE 3: Return

A young couple goes snorkeling in the sea. While underwater, they spot a fissure on the seabed. The girl signals to the guy to explore it but the guy wants to go back up. While the two are distracted, something grabs the girl from inside the fissure and takes her. News of the missing girl spreads just as a typhoon is poised to hit the island community. Banba-sensei is called to the place by a colleague who shows him a picture of a dead tentacled sea monster. Meanwhile, another tentacled sea monster shows up on the beach, leading the young man to go after it with a trident. He "kills" the creature and later sets it on fire. Banba-sensei goes to talk to him, telling him that the creature he just killed could be the very girl he was looking for. He then shows the young man an x-ray of the sea creature, where it is revealed that the creature has fused itself with a human body. The young man refuses to believe him. That night, the authorities impose a curfew to prepare for the incoming typhoon. A man notices that the burned corpse of the sea creature had disappeared. In the house of the young man, he hears a strange noise coming from outside. But when he opens the door to investigate, he finds it is only one of his friends. The girl tries to sympathize with him but while they talk, the young man notices the sea creature appear behind her. He leaps towards it with a knife and stabs at it, all the while denying that the sea creature could be his missing girlfriend. He is taken aback when he sees a vision of his girlfriend inside the sea creature. While he is distracted, the sea creature takes him and together the two of them fall into the sea. The next day, two dead sea creatures are washed ashore.
COMMENTS:

I've long stopped trying to figure out the overarching plot of this show. Maybe there is no plot and it's just one monster story week after week. I'm not complaining though. Each episode is too short to merit nit-picking. The episode entertains enough as it unfolds. While I am not wowed by the story each week, I am nevertheless fine with watching and blogging about it. Anyway, it's just seven minutes.

This week, they've chosen to entertain us with a tentacle monster. But instead of giving us the titillating story of the fisherman's wife, they decided to make a straightforward horror story of a girl inside a monster. We're supposed to feel for the young man, who has to find out the hard way that the monster he hates so much is the very same girl that meant the world to him. And the way the story ended lends it a sort of poetic justice. But it's all ham-fisted and shallow and I felt that the story could be told better.

EPISODE 3

An office girl works alone late. The lights flicker but she does not seem too bothered by it. A television set behind her turns on by itself. At that moment, her cellphone rings. A friend calls her to ask if she's still at the office. She answers that she'll be home soon. The friend asks what the noise is and she says that it's the television. After she ends the call, the TV suddenly clears, showing footage of the office hallway. She sees someone pass by. Paying no heed to it, she goes back to desk, but the computer monitors all around her turn on by themselves, freaking her out. The lights also gradually turn off until the office is engulfed in darkness. The office girl stares at the TV but turns as various dark shadows appear around her. She screams.
Okay. The scare factor here is the idea of working late and being alone in the office. Of course, I've never actually had any unusual encounter in all my late nights beating deadlines. So yeah. I enjoyed this.
