Tales from Earthsea (Gedo Senki) is the latest animated feature film from Studio Ghibli and the directing debut of Goro Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki's son. The film, released in 2006, received mixed reviews from critics. After seeing it, Ursula Le Guin, the author of the original Earthsea books from which the film was adapted, was said to have initially responded to Goro Miyazaki: "It is not my book. It is your movie. It is a good movie." (source) Even so, Tales from Earthsea was #1 at the Japanese Box Office on its opening week, going to on to be the #4 top grossing movie for the year in Japan.

While the film may have been of doubtful quality (the animation and production values are unquestionably Studio Ghibli caliber but somewhere the story suffered from the adaptation from book to film), the soundtrack more than makes up for it. Composed by Tamiya Terashima, it features the beautiful lyrical quality of countryside songs and the otherworldly mysteriousness of fantastical tales.
