2010 Anime Report: The Best List

So I realize that I haven't really made my year-ender report for 2010 as per this blog's tradition in the past two years. I suppose I got busy. I'm also about to get busy but I still have at least one week before work will get the better of me. Therefore, allow me to milk these precious free moments to give you my humble list of best and not-so-best titles of anime for the year 2010. (BTW, for categories, I'm taking my cue from jute's previous year-ender posts.)

Most Highly Anticipated Series

I have to admit that this was a tough choice. What did I most look forward to? These two series came out in two different seasons and perhaps because of the gap in time, it's a little hard to compare the anticipation I felt for each one. So I'm afraid that my decision has largely something to do with the overall feeling of satisfaction I got from the series, and not necessarily with how I felt before I watched the first episode.

Best First Episode

For the most part, this was a no-brainer. Occult Academy did have a strong opening, which makes all the more ironic the extent to which it downgraded and eventually fell flat on its face. In hindsight, the series could have done better if it didn't have such a good first episode because then, expectations would not have been set high and I would have come off it a lot less disappointed.

Best Finale

Another no-brainer. What a revelation Katanagatari turned out to be. This is anime done right, and if I knew a word of Japanese, I'd go read the light novels right away. NisiOisin, you the man!

Best Randomly Picked Series

Hands-down. And just imagine that I never even paid attention to this series the first time I heard about it. I thought the art style was a little child illustration book material and it is, for the most part, but strangely enough, it works for this series. And the best thing about it is the story. Fantastic.

Favorite Title

Do I have to spell it out? And to think that I almost dropped this series, not because of anything lacking in the material itself, but because of its airing schedule. White Fox made it difficult with a once-a-month release, but in the end it was worth it.

Favorite Female Character
Busujima Saeko [High School of the Dead]
(Nino, Yasuri Nanami, Tsurugi Meisai, Kazumiya Rio)

Busujima-senpai ♥ ~ Nuff said. Although Nanami and Meisai made the choice a little tough.

Favorite Male Character
Yasuri Shichika [Katanagatari]
(Watashi, Shizuo, Yaichi, Ichinomiya Kou)

I liked Yaichi mainly because of his sexy voice. Kou, despite the insanity surrounding him, developed nicely. Watashi is love but talks too fast. Shichika, on the other hand, had the luxury of a one-hour-long-episode-a-month-for-twelve-months time to develop from a complete toolbox to a human being. Watching it was superb.

Funniest Character
(Togame, Kuwashiro Maya, Hoshi, Maria, Sister)

No doubt about it. Arakawa Under the Bridge has the best cast that if the categories included one for best cast, it would surely win. As it is, if I were to chose between Hoshi and all the other eccentric characters from the series, I'd chose the former. Why? Watch the show.

Favorite Villain
Yasuri Nanami [Katanagatari]
(Yasuri Nanami, Tsurugi Meisai, Ozu, Izaya, zombies)

I loved Meisai. I thought she had an excellent story. But in terms of bad-assness, Nanami pwns them all.

Favorite Couple
Yasuri Shichika x Togame [Katanagatari]
(Yasuri Shichika x Togame, Watashi x Akashi, Susukihotaru x Riken, Ichinomiya Kou x Nino, Kurashita Tsukimi x Koibuchi Shu)

I couldn't take them seriously at first. Togame was obviously using Shichika for her own gain and Shichika was too quick to declare himself in love with Togame right after she asks him to that it was just too incredible. But as time went, the love story became real, made more poignant by its bittersweet ending. Who can't love this couple after all that?

Favorite Crack Couple
Maria x Sister [Arakawa Under the Bridge]
(Kuwashiro Maya x Uchida Fumiaki, Yaichi x Otake, Kazumiya Rio x Filicia Hiediman, Busujima Saeko x Komuro Takashi)

Talk about S & M. But the love story between Maria and Sister is pretty one-sided, and the violence that occurs whenever the two are together in one scene makes it doubly hilarious. Ah, love.

Favorite Slash Couple
Izaya Orihara x Shizuo [Durarara!!]
(Yaichi x Akitsu Masanosuke, Kazumiya Rio x Filicia Hiediman, Togame x Hitei-hime)

Simon pretty much confirmed it in the last episode, calling Izaya's constant picking on Shizuo as his "Shizuo complex." Besides, what's love without a little man-handling? (and vending machine throwing?)

Best Horror Series

The series started out very slow, so slow in fact that I could barely get through it. Add to that the very distracting character design and hair-do. But don't let appearances fool you because this series is creepy. No, I don't mean you're going to spend the entire time screaming pantsless at your monitor. The scary is more psychological here for the monsters aren't the only monsters in Shiki.

Best Comedy Series

When I came up to this point, I thought to myself: "Hm, which is funnier? A cross-dressing nun with an unhealthy regard for guns or a boob wall? But Arakawa Under the Bridge has the advantage of having an insane number of cast who, well, insane, so it wins by sheer number.

Best Drama Series

I think Shiki should win this category. But I have not yet finished watching the entire series so I can't really say. House of Five Leaves, however, turned out very well.

Best Action Series
(Durarara!!, Katanagatari, Star Driver Radiant Takuto, Heroman)

If there was a category for best fan service, the series would win it, too. Busujima-senpai ♥ ~

Best Romance Series

I don't know if you can correctly classify this series as a romance. There certainly are some romantic elements in it. At the very least, there are unrequited crushes. But the show doesn't resolve any of the possible romantic entanglements so...eh. On the other hand, the runners-up aren't really about the romance either so there. Kuragehime wins this category because I actually was aware of the romantic tensions at first blush and primarily watched this show for that.

Best Production Value

Madhouse. Need I say more? With this title, they've saved themselves this year. Now, if only I could say the same thing for 2011. But perhaps, I'm saying too much too soon. After all, we have two whole anime seasons still coming up.

Best Opening Theme
"Maigoinu to Ame no Beat" by Asian Kung-Fu Generation (The Tatami Galaxy)

Best Ending Theme
"Kimi no Kirei ni Kizuite Okure" by Sambomaster (Kuragehime)

Best BGM

Kaijura Yuuki, baby. Also, Kalafina. (Keiko-san ~)

Best Voice Cast

I really, really liked Yaichi's voice. But I'm judging this based on the entire voice cast and Katanagatari has the best, IMHO. The Tatami Galaxy also came close because...Sakamoto Maaya (who is also in Arakawa Under the Bridge).

Best Style

SHAFT / Shinbo did something amazing with Arakawa Under the Bridge. But stylistically, The Tatami Galaxy was pure insanity. Add to that the really messed up presentation and we have ourselves a winner.

Best Animation

Because I don't know. The whole series was just cute.

Best Background Art

Not much of a choice really. I thought High School of the Dead would win this one for sure but on second look, SHAFT did a pretty good job with the river scenery.

Best Character Designs

The designs fit the characters. Watashi looked generic enough as to be anonymous. Ozu certainly looks devious. And Akashi is seriously cute and fits the bill for the girl-next-door type only with more grrr.

Best Storytelling

NisiOisin. Nuff said.

Best Concept

Everything about it, even its title, screams: GENIUS. And the whole rewind bit confused the shit out of me at first but in the end, all I could say was BRILLIANT. And a main character named "Watashi?" Absolutely inspired!

Anime Series of the Year

As much as I loved The Tatami Galaxy (for its eclectic style) and thoroughly enjoyed Kuragehime, Katanagatari offers a more complete package. Style, it has it in spades. Cuteness, why, yes. See Togame and Nanami and Pengu. Story? Absolutely.

Here's another album that I've had for quite a while. It's the official soundtrack of the recently concluded artsy anime by Madhouse on last season's noitaminA time slot, The Tatami Galaxy. I quite like it.

Yakushimaru Etsuko - Kami-sama no Iu Toori (The Tatami Galaxy ED Single)

RELEASED: 05.26.2010
LABEL: Sony Music Entertainment
TRACKLIST:
1. Kami-sama no Iu Toori
2. Kami-sama no Iu Toori
3. Kami-sama no Iu Toori
BUY: @ Play-Asia.com

This is the ED single for The Tatami Galaxy, called Kami-sama no Iu Toori (lit. "As God Says It"). It's performed by Yakushimaru Etsuko, the same gal who performed the OP theme for Arakawa Under the Bridge. I don't like the latter but Kami-sama is pretty cute. I especially like the simplicity of the accompanying clip of floor plans showcased in the series' end.

Enjoy sampling this baby and if you like it, buy it.

The Tatami Galaxy 6

Ok, so I know that I said I'm not going to blog The Tatami Galaxy any longer and this post doesn't change that. But I just like to say that I have misunderstood this series entirely. Call me by any other name but my Japanese really does not exist, which is to say that I am entirely dependent on subs. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of groups brave enough to take up The Tatami Galaxy for a fansubbing project and not all of them are good. One group was so bad -- I won't mention the name, since I forgot -- I felt better off just watching the entire thing raw than go through that English muck. Commie is doing a pretty decent job but their releases don't come fast enough.

Anyway, long story short, I was WRONG. These episodes do have something to do with each other and there is in fact an over-arching plot in all this. It's only the timeline that's a bit confusing, what with all the surreal going-back-in-time schtick and the very loopy narrative.

For what it's worth, this episode is hilarious. I don't know if it's because the subs are infinitely better than the ones I used on the previous two episodes. Anyhoo, yah, my high regard for this show is back in full swing.

The Tatami Galaxy 3-5

I don't really know how to blog this series. It's obvious by now that each episode is self-contained and has nothing to do with the rest. True, there are similarities but they're all from sheer force of the writer's personal style rather than from the fact that they all seem to be about the same thing. If anything, The Tatami Galaxy is honest in that way.

Our ego wants us to believe that we're all a bit different from the rest of the population, that our experience is either worse or better than that of others', when in reality, we all pretty much go through the same thing at precisely the same time. I guess that's the point here. Clever and I'll continue to watch the show but as far as blogging the series? I'm not sure I can, unless I start blogging it on a per episode basis, which I can't do.

Oh, well.

For all of you who are interested in this series, don't let my dropping it from this blog discourage you. It, by no means, reflects on its quality. The Tatami Galaxy is a quirky little piece of animation I shouldn't say "magic" but that's the word that comes to mind. It's hard to get into and it may puzzle you at first but if you're flexible, willing-to-try-anything type, it won't disappoint.

The Tatami Galaxy 2

EPISODE 02: Movie Circle Misogi

the princely Jougasaki, leader of the movie circle

The episode begins with Watashi and Ozu watching a hidden camera video of Jougasaki, a senpai in school who apparently has many strange habits. After the opening sequence, Watashi narrates how as a freshman he thought that the movie circle is going to be his ticket to a "rosy campus life." But he is sadly mistaken when he figures out that the club's leader, the uber-popular Jougasaki, is merely using him and everyone else in the club to make himself look good.
my eyes spit fire!

When Watashi figures this out, his righteous indignation leads him to make smaller, independent films. However, his films' subject matters are simply too weird and out-of-this-world to please his audience. The only person who seems to get it is Akashi, a younger student who is pretty enough to become popular but whose reserved and blunt demeanor scares most people away. Watashi suffers no such ill-will from Akashi but he's too wrapped in his own little world to notice her as a possible romantic interest.
Akashi and Watashi

Meanwhile, Jougasaki continues to ride on his popularity and decides to film a much hyped-over remake of "Alexander the Great." In response and at Ozu's instigation, Watashi decides to make a documentary on Jougasaki, revealing all his dirty secrets from bad grades to his boob fetish, OCD and a mannequin girlfriend at home. Ozu then inserts film into "Alexander the Great" so that instead of the expected movie, what the audience see are hidden camera clips of Jougasaki at his worst moments, thus earning the latter's long-standing grudge.
I'm a bit confused. Is Watashi in this episode the same Watashi in the first episode? Because the story is different, yet the timeline is the same. Moreover, the characters are the same except for the narrator who doesn't seem to be playing the same part. Also, repetition can be a clever way of driving a point. In The Tatami Galaxy, particularly this episode, I don't think it worked very well. The jokes are not that funny a second time around.

First Look: The Tatami Galaxy 1

EPISODE 1: Tennis Club Cupid

the narrator (just called "I" or watashi in Japanese) at Neko Ramen, home to the best ramen in Japan

The Japanese title for this is Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei. I have a fantastic time spelling it, it's giving me a headache. So, let's just call this by its English title, The Tatami Galaxy. Sounds far-out, which is what this anime aims to be with its generally super flat animation style, super insane color schemes and super fast dialogue but actually super simple storyline. I like it.
the self-proclaimed god of match-making meets the self-proclaimed black cupid

An unnamed college student -- henceforth referred to as "Watashi" (Asanuma Shintaro) -- enters university with the aim to live a "rosy campus life." However, his dream is derailed when he discovers at the very last moment that a "rosy campus life" requires social skills, which he unfortunately lacks. Rendered hopeless by this unseen turn of events, he quickly gets with the wrong buddy, a real mischief-maker by the name of Ozu (Yoshino Hiroyuki). Together, the two of them gain notoriety for being the "Black Cupids," who specialize in playing pranks and sabotaging relationships. It takes one proverbial night at the Neko Ramen and a meeting with the god of match-making for Watashi to change his acquired outlook in campus life and finally take notice of Akashi (Sakamoto Maaya), a pretty freshman from the Engineering Department who seems quite interested in him. But after a two-year history of being a love cynic and with Ozu as his rival, can Watashi really turn a new leaf?

Ozu, the demon, plays Watashi in the palm of his hand

The Tatami Galaxy is weird. It's also pretty funny and spot-on. That is, if you can follow the armalite talk and the abstract images that rapidly flash across the screen. I think the speed is the only thing I take issue in. The rest are hella entertaining stuff. The fact that this anime seems to be rom-com means that it's right up my alley. The weirdness I can take in. I don't normally go for the bizarre (that's Jute's line) but I do appreciate style and The Tatami Galaxy's quirkiness seems more geared towards style than substance. The content itself is pretty normal -- mature normal, which is fine.

All in all, I like it. The characters are interesting. The opening (by Asia Kung-Fu generation) and ending themes -- I noticed them, hee -- are cool. The eccentric animation style fits the offbeat subject matter. And, oh look, it's Sakamoto Maaya again. Damn, she's busy this season.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei PV

DDL [Mediafire]

I'm looking forward to Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei anime ever since I saw the promo photos up. The art is really intriguing, and from the looks of the pv, the anime is going to be one of those outrageous ones like that with the suicidal sensei or maybe Trapeze (which I never got to watch).

It seems the Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei anime going to come out on April 22. Still a month to go. Anyhoo, this is the promotional video which I managed to snag from Noitamina's official site on this anime show.

Spring 2010 Anime Preview

From AnimeSuki and Chartfag's Spring 2010 Anime Line-Up. Looks awesome:

Iron Man

OFFICIAL (Marvel) | OFFICIAL (Madhouse) (JPN) | MAL | Teaser Trailer

We all know the story so no need to elaborate. What we do need to know is that this is the first of Madhouse's collaboration with Marvel to bring the latter's more famous titles to the Japanese audience. Next summer, we have Wolverine. I'm more excited about that (Madhouse's treatment of Wolverine's character design looks so strange) but I'd like to see this one to get a feel for the other. :) I'm sure a lot of people are also looking forward to this.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei

OFFICIAL (Noitamina) (JPN) | AniDB | ANN | MAL

Another Madhouse number and it's Noitamina, a word that has become synonymous with "quality anime." I don't really know what it's about. It's apparently an adaptation of a manga by Morimi Tomohiko and it looks josei. The picture looks interesting though. It looks funny, eclectic and quite eye-catching. If this turns out to be of the tone of Solanin, I am going to like it.

House of Five Leaves

OFFICIAL (JPN) | AniDB | ANN | | MAL

This is the story about a ronin (masterless samurai), Akitsu Masanosuke who becomes the bodyguard of the leader of a criminal gang, Five Leaves. Yes, I know, the story doesn't seem to amount to much but the character design is appealing, it's by Manglobe, and samurai, yo! So this one is definitely in the basket. Out of all titles, I'm probably most looking forward to this.

Hero Man

OFFICIAL (Stan Lee's production company) | OFFICIAL (Square-Enix) (JPN) | ANN | MAL

The story follows a boy, Joey, who finds a robot that transforms into a giant robot, Heroman, which Joey uses to fight evil. (from ANN)

One word: Bones. Also, in tiny fonts: stan lee. The man is so big, he doesn't need big letters for his name. I'm still reeling over the wow-ness factor of Xam'd: Lost Memories. Now, this...yes!

Hakuoki Shinsengumi Kitan

OFFICIAL (Otomate Game) (JPN) | ANN | MAL

Oh my god, pretty boys! With swords! And look at the detail of that costume.

Hakuoki is a PS2 game and is reverse harem. Ugh. I have bad experiences with games turned into anime and hate girls surrounded by pretty boys. But this one comes with a no-fail safety button: Shinsengumi.

It follows the story of a Dutch girl who comes to Japan to look for her father. While searching for her father (who is a doctor), she stumbles upon a Shinsengumi member (I don't know which one) just as he is turning into a monster. Trouble ensues when she realizes that this weird transformation may have something to do with her father's works and that in order to find him, she has to disguise herself as a man and become part of Shinsengumi.

That's all for now.
