Phantom 04-05: Another Life, On The Job

This show just keeps getting better and better. I think it also helps that I'm watching it in 1280 x 720 screen resolution.
EPISODE 04: Assassination
More Screencaps from Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom 04

Inferno wants to take out a mafia big boss, but because of the high level of security around him, there is only a very small window of opportunity, so they send out their two best assets to perform the job. Their intel reveals that the boss will be in a shopping mall on a particular day to buy a birthday gift for his granddaughter. Ein and Zwei spend an entire day studying the area and pretending to be young lovers on vacation. While Ein has no trouble acting out her role, Zwei seems to be confused between what's only acting and what is real. Ein picks up on this and gives him a warning. On the day of the assassination, Ein finds herself tailed by the boss' men so she calls Zwei for help. He comes running to her, only to get slapped, Ein acting as the angry girlfriend who has been made to wait too long. Zwei shifts into his role immediately and acts apologetic. Seeing this scenario, the boss' men withdraw. Later, after the boss has bought the present and is making his way out of the building, Ein and Zwei also make a quick exit through a back door. There, they change into their "Phantom" costumes and head out. Just as the mafia let their guards down, Inferno's phantoms descend on them. Ein goes straight for the boss while Zwei provides her with cover. But after Ein takes out the boss, she almost gets shot herself if not for Zwei who grabs her in the nick of time. At that moment, Ein realizes that Scythe Master was right about Zwei treading the same path, which took her two years, in only three months. Scythe Master arrives just then as their get-away driver. Back in their hideout, Ein acknowledges that Zwei reminds her of her old self and that she is afraid.

EPISODE 05: Moment
More Screencaps from Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom 05

Inferno wants to take over Melanie Square, a lucrative casino in California. Problem is, the Stone Family, and especially its boss "Hard-headed" Tony, does not want to give it up and instead they try to find out as much about Inferno as they can. Information, however, is hard to come by and Tony just assumes that Inferno must be run by families from the West Coast. He arranges a meet with Inferno's leader, knowing very well that the group would only send a representative, and comes up with a plan to force the group to back off from the Stone Family's turf. Inferno accepts the invite and sends one of their senior members, Claudia McCunnen to California. Claudia contacts Ein and Zwei, sending each of them on separate missions. Once again, Ein and Zwei pretend to be a couple as they observe Tony, his wife and his son at an amusement park. Later, Tony and his henchmen meet up with Claudia to negotiate the matter over Melanie Square. The negotiation, however, ends at a stand-still as Tony puts his plan into motion, taking out the big guns and starting to shoot. Claudia and Lizzie, as her bodyguard, manage to take cover while Ein, from her position on the rooftop of a building across the street, snipes Tony's men one by one. Meanwhile, Zwei is in position outside Tony's house and despite all the guards patrolling the area, he makes it inside easy and enters the room belonging to Tony's son. Zwei takes out the son and mother and makes it out of there before the guards are even alerted to his presence. Their mission accomplished, Zwei returns to Claudia, who takes him into her arms, while Ein waits for him in the hideout.

COMMENTS:

For a minute there, while I was watching the opening scene of Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom episode 4, I thought was watching the wrong show. It's that weird seeing Ein act like that. So I can understand why Zwei seemed so confused the whole time. It must have been disconcerting suddenly being subjected to a cute and affectionate version of Ein when all this time he's been used to the stoic, emotionless version of the same girl. But then he adapts very quickly and in the end even Ein admits to herself that Zwei is catching up to her. While she acknowledges that he is what she used to be, I wonder if she does not feel a little threatened and maybe that's what she means by being afraid.

This eventual showdown between Ein and Zwei is strongly hinted at in episode 5 when Claudia makes it very obvious that she's taking Zwei under her wing while Ein continues to be Scythe Master's puppet. From episode 1, we know that there's a standing rivalry between Claudia and Scythe Master and with both of them grooming each assassin to be loyal only to them, how will this affect Ein and Zwei's relationship?

Speaking of relationships, by now, I'm pretty sure that I'm not just imagining the sexual tension between Ein and Zwei. It certainly makes for a great scene between these two even when they exchange barely two lines with each other at any one time.

I'm really starting to get into this whole thing. I like that the story is taking an unusual angle in telling a more or less derivative concept. The series does not mince around the fact that its protagonists are the bad guys -- assassins who kill in cold blood and for no conceivable reason other than that they're just following orders. And while their victims are not all together good (they are mafia bosses who kill without hesitation and run illegal businesses), the series portray them as ordinary people with their own families and loyalties and Inferno, the faceless entity that seeks to destroy all that with its two hands: Ein and Zwei.

Phantom doesn't seem to have a clear plot at the moment and nothing in the aired episodes so far reveal even a hint of a build-up towards an actual plot arc. I think the story is at a point where the protagonists have to take out one big boss per episode in order to allow them to develop and reveal their characters more fully. It's definitely taking its sweet time but I'm enjoying the show so far.

KOKIA - KARMA (Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom OP Single)

RELEASED: 04.22.2009
LABEL: Sony Music
TRACKLIST:
1. KARMA
2. Insonnia
3. KARMA (instrumental)
4. Insonnia (instrumental)

KARMA is the 17th album to date by prolific Japanese singer-songwriter, Kokia. It is also the first opening single for the new Bee Train anime, Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom.

The anime follows the life of two assassins. One, a young girl who goes by the name of "Ein" but is nicknamed "Phantom" because of her skills as a top assassin for the shady organization, known only as Inferno. The other one is "Zwei," who started out as a lone Japanese tourist witnessing the Phantom's crimes. As a result, Inferno aimed to eliminate him. But because of his strong instinct for survival, a few members of the group decided to wipe his memories instead and train him as an assassin like Ein.

The studio Bee Train is well-known for popularizing the 'girls-with-guns' genre (Noir, Madlax, El Cazador de la Bruja). In all of those shows, the music -- classical, chamber and slightly operatic -- played a significant role. It's the same for Phantom, only this time, Kokia, who is known for her being able to hold long-tone opera notes anyway, does the hypnotic, somnambuling opening theme. The B-side to the single, Insonnia (Italian for "insomnia"), echoes the operatic flavors of KARMA but plays like a lucid dream.

Phantom 02-03: The Making of a Killer

The series passed the three-episode rule. Then again, it's pretty much a given that I'll be blogging the show because Bee Train, yeah, and assassins.
EPISODE 02: Training

Zwei and Ein have their first conversation (after she tried to kill him in the previous episode) in which Ein finally explains why she attacked him (to test his skill). Meanwhile, Scythe Master reports to Inferno about the status of Zwei, who undergoes training under Ein's tutelage. One day, Ein gets called out to an assassination misson and while she is away, Zwei meets Claudia, who, for reasons known only to her, reveals Inferno's goal (to unite the underworld). She adds that Phantom is the key to achieving that goal. As the undisputed top assassin, Phantom is Inferno's greatest hope and their enemies' greatest fear. Zwei argues that no matter how good Phantom is, she, along with Zwei, is still a slave. But Claudia is quick to disabuse him of that notion as she points out that even if they work for Inferno, they are free to do one thing, which is to progress. She leaves Zwei with that single thought. When Ein returns a while later, Zwei finds out that like him, Ein's memories were also erased but she is very matter of fact about it. She explains that once Zwei kills someone, he would understand. The next day, Zwei's training continues.

EPISODE 03: Practice

The episode begins with Claudia's memory of a presumably Inferno assassin called "Romero." Back in the desert, Ein teaches Zwei knife-fighting skills. During the fight, Zwei figures out that on that first night (Episode 01), Ein intentionally let him win. In Mexico, a corrupt Navy Seal captain seeks help from Inferno when he finds himself the target of an investigation by the FBI. Instead of helping him, they use him as target practice for Zwei. At first, Zwei is unwilling to make his first kill but eventually does the deed when he gets cornered. Ein, who is watching over him, then appears in order to give him an ultimatum: to live as an assassin or to die under her hands. Zwei makes the obvious choice. Ein then commands him to stand up and when he does, he strips himself of his old personality and truly becomes "Zwei."
COMMENTS:

I'm watching the series in 1280 x 720 screen resolution (AAC-x264), mkv format (subbed by Desire). The files are huge but each episode, so far, is beautiful. I'm noticing some downgrade in production values but it's not obvious and the key scenes are still very nicely drawn.

I also finally noticed the BGM. Lots of melancholic, classical style music that I'm not sure fit too well in some of the scenes. I'm specifically talking about that scene in Episode 3 where Scythe Master puts some sort of oil on Ein's body while discussing Zwei's progress. Such a creepy scene and yet the music was puerile.

I'm hoping that Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom will fulfill all the expectations I had of Noir that were never quite realized, and so far so good. It's becoming clear that the big difference between the two is that where Noir emphasized technique and style, Phantom is about the nitty-gritty details without necessarily going overboard with the violence. Indeed, despite Phantom's apparent obsession with guns, there has yet been a scene showing Ein or Zwei performing the actual killing. We hear shots and we see blood oozing from the body of victims but not a single frame of the actual act of shooting. I don't think it's to preserve the viewer rating because this show is at least PG-13, so maybe it's just a matter of personal taste on the production staff.

So about the story so far, there is as of yet no story. I mean, yes, we know that Ein and Zwei work for Inferno and that Inferno wants to take over the underworld, but other than that, there's nothing on the actual plot yet. Right now, we are watching Zwei go through the process of becoming an assassin. In Episode 03, he just made his first major step and I think it won't be long now before we start to see some action other than Zwei and Ein going at it.

First Impression: Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom

I can't make up my mind if this is a standard assassin anime with dark underpinnings or a romance title. Maybe it's both. In any case, if I were to judge Phantom ~ Requiem of the Phantom (a.k.a. Phantom of the Inferno) by the first episode alone, it has fulfilled my initial expectations. Now, the only concern I have is if Bee Train can sustain the promise laid out by the series' promo stuff.

The series begins with two Inferno members discussing an assassination plan. In Los Angeles, a young man infiltrates a heavily guarded mansion while his comrade-in-arms, the Phantom disguised as a housemaid, takes care of the guards inside. Through a flashback, it is revealed that the young man is "Zwei," a Japanese tourist who witnessed an assassination ordered by Inferno and became himself an assassin after all his memories were erased by the scientist, Scythe Master. As an Inferno member, Zwei trains with the Phantom, called "Ein," and during the course of their training they develop an emotional connection. Back to the present, Ein and Zwei eliminate their real target, a mafioso boss, whom Inferno wants dead. The episode closes with the Inferno bosses celebrating a "new world order" and cameo appearances of, as of yet, unknown characters.
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
Can anybody say Noir? I can't really help making the comparison, considering that Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom (hereafter referred to as simply Phantom) is animated by the same studio (Bee Train) and the same director (Mashimo Koichi) who did Noir. And the similarities don't actually end there because both series proceed from the same plot premise: two deadly assassins, one of whom is emotionally crippled yet lethal while the other is riddled with questions about his forgotten past; both of them work together for the same shady organization, of which they know nothing about; and both are emotionally connected with each other (understandable considering that they have no one else but each other). Music also plays an important role, not only in conveying the emotions and mental state of the characters but also to create atmosphere (made more necessary in Phantom because the light-and-shadow technique used in Noir is notably absent here). Granted Kajiura Yuki is not responsible for the BGM or the opening and ending themes (done by Nanase Hikaru instead) but the classical chamber music style characteristic of the composer is hard to miss.
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
But don't get me wrong though. Because while there certainly are similarities between the two series, I don't find them at all objectionable. In fact, I think it enhances my viewing experience because as much as I loved Noir and its idea, I had some reservations about its production values. It does not look to me like Phantom will have the same problem. On the contrary, the series looks very good. Maybe the title text in the opening clip is a bit tacky but the rest of the video sequence is artistically done and stylish. The same with the ending clip. As for the rest of the episode, the character designs look good. Ein's maid outfit bothered me when I saw the promo video of the series but she actually wears it for only a short period in the episode so yeah. Also, the whole mask thing is not as corny as I initially thought. I don't know if it is a direct reference to Phantom of the Opera but I appreciate that it's a major theme in the series, if their prominence in both the opening and ending sequences are any indication.

The series definitely has a lot of potential and I get the feeling that there's some romance involved, too. So far so good. The main characters are likeable although perhaps their current lack of personality will make it hard for viewers to connect with them in the long run. Here's to hoping the series doesn't get too involved with building the plot at the expense of character development.

IN SUM --

Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom is a darkish anime that's slightly romantic and potentially deep. If you liked all the other girls-with-guns genre by Bee Train like Noir and Madlax, this anime is for you. Otherwise, the mystery-action combo should make it well worth the watch.

Phantom ~ Requiem of a Phantom PV

Can hardly wait for April ~
DDL PV @ MF (avi, 7.68MB)

The promo video just came out, subbed by Chibi Subs & Formula. So far, it looks good and unmistakably BeeTrain. I'm especially glad that the character designs actually bear some resemblance to the ones in the promo poster. That makes this show look even more attractive, though I must admit that the main character reminds me of Kirika. Both characters lack facial expressions. On the other hand, the mask is a nice touch although not in any way novel. Didn't Balrog / Vega in Streetfighter sport a similar mask? Also, the maid outfit. Erm, let's not talk about the maid outfit.

The action sequences -- or what little there was shown in the promo -- didn't look too promising, although the knee-kick was pretty cool. I'm guessing Phantom ~ Requiem of a Phantom isn't too big on action. Yeah, I know that's weird for a series about assassins but it looks to me like this one is a character piece. I don't really mind it so long as there's enough going on with the character development and relationships. I sense smokin' hot romance. Well, maybe not but that's a really suggestive pose.OH MY GOD. I cannot get over the silliness of the mask. I really do hope this is good.

Spring 2009 Anime Preview

Yeah, so it's that time again. Brand new season, brand new shows. It's a shorter list this time and I'm not even sure I'll blog every one of these titles. Last season, we got bombarded with sequels. I didn't really mind those because, you know, all I had to do was to not watch the series at all. This time around, the studios have put together some very interesting titles and some rather generic ones as well. The ones below are those that made it to the short list.

Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom ~
OFFICIAL | TV-Tokyo | ANN | Wikipedia

A spate of mafia assasinations occurs in America, the work of the mysterious organization named Inferno. "Phantom" is their most strongest and capable assassin, however a lone tourist witnesses Phantom's latest act of murder. He unwittingly exposes the top assassin's true identity, a young girl named Ein. Witnesses are usually killed, but the man is captured and taken to be brainwashed into "Zwei", Inferno's newest assassin, with no memory of who he is. From this point on, Zwei is drawn into a world of conspiracy, deceit and violence. (ANN)
COMMENTS:

Bee Train. That's all that I can really say at this point. I mean, aside from the promising plot summary and the attractive poster. I mean, dude, now that is a gun. And poor you, did you cut yourself shaving this morning? Anyway, this one has melancholy written all over it, which is not a problem since I do have a taste for depressing storylines. Also, assassins! What more can I possibly ask for?

Fullmetal Alchemist 2

Set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man, the story follows the brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who want to restore their bodies after a disastrous failed attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy. (Wikipedia)
COMMENTS:

Well, this is supposed to be a remake of the original series, which I have yet to watch (I've got all 50+ episodes gathering dust on my desk). The manga is reportedly better than the anime so this being a more faithful adaptation of the manga, I believe this is supposed to be superior. I am vaguely interested in this series but there is no chance of me blogging it since 51 episodes is too much of a commitment.

He appears to have lost his memory. and he is stark naked, except for the gun he holds in one hand, and the mobile phone he's holding with the other hand. A phone that is charged with 8,200,000,000 yen in digital cash. (ANN)
COMMENTS:

This series has an awesome staff. Of course, I don't ever discount the fact that this is Production I.G. And not just Production I.G. but the Production I.G. I have come to love: Kamiyama Kenji of Seirei no Moribito fame returns at the helm to direct this series based on an original script written by himself. The character designs are done by Umino Chika, the mangaka of Honey and Clover. Although I have never seen Honey and Clover (and likely never will), I am familiar with her style. I don't know how her kind of old-school, stationary style will fit with a futuristic setting but I can imagine it adding a bit of fantastical element to the whole thing. Anyway, looking forward to this.
Natsu no Arashi!

TV-Tokyo | Starchild | ANN | Wikipedia

Thirteen-year-old Yasaka is a boy staying at his grandfather's house during his summer vacation. One day he meets Arashi, a beautiful sixteen-year old girl with mysterious powers. After trying to protect her from a man who claims to have been hired by her family to take her back by force, Yasaka ran away with her and now she stays at his grandpa's place with him. The plot thickens when he finds a sixty-year-old picture of Arashi and another girl named Kaja, and to the surprise of all Kaja suddenly appears, and just like Arashi, her appearance hasn't changed at all since then. (Wikipedia)
COMMENTS:

The obligatory romance title on the list. Supposedly, the dude who wrote and drew the manga on which this anime is based is the same dude who created School Rumble. But I've only seen one or two episodes of that one and although they were appreciably hilarious episodes, I can't really say anything much about the series itself. I think I'll use the three-episode rule on this one.

Nicoletta goes to the restaurant that is now owned by the new husband of Nicoletta's mother, and ends up apprenticing there among a kitchen staff of colorful characters. (ANN)
COMMENTS:

The promo poster kind of got me. It looks really hip. Unfortunately, there's very little information about this series apart from the fact that it seems to be an anime adaptation of a manga by Natsume Ono. Of course, I don't know her and of course, I've never heard of the manga. But, lately, I've been watching a lot of local cooking shows, not because I'm trying to be a cook myself (me and the kitchen, not a good combination) but because, for some strange reason, I am fascinated by chefs...mainly by what they talk about when they're cooking. It's sooo...educational. So proceeding from that acquired taste of mine, I think I'll give this show a try.
