After an extremely tense match, however, Ayumi overpowers Shion's shougi with his relentless determination to win. But, just after losing to Ayumi for the second time and losing consciousness, Shion thanks Ayumi for saving her from the stalker six months ago, thereby revealing that she knows it was Ayumi all along.
Meanwhile, the detectives are still on the trail of the person who sent Shion the fax, believing that his identity holds a clue to the murder of her parents eight years ago.

Shion's loss in the previous episode means Ayumi advances to the final match against Saori. But even as Ayumi's skills are impressive for a recently promoted pro kishi, Saori takes the win from him, seemingly with very little effort. The match teaches the two a few things: this is the first match for Saori where she makes an attempt to read her opponent's emotions, while Ayumi realizes just how important it is for him to become stronger as a shougi player.

The Yasuokas are at a hot springs, for a well-deserved break, where Shion finds out that Shinji (her adoptive father) was once a contender for meijin and played against Hani. After learning more about her father's passion for shougi, Shion gets more determined to become a stronger player.
Meanwhile, Ayumi comes home to find his father stealing the money he won at shougi matches. When he tries to stop him, his father only pushes him away, saying that since he was the one who taught Ayumi how to play the game in the first place, he'd consider the money as his compensation.
Weeks later, Shion is invited to a shougi lesson by a man who is being asked to sponsor the Association. Saori has been invited as well. However, once they arrive at the meeting place, they are surprised to find that the man is none other than the younger brother of Hani-meijin and that the lesson is not a lesson at all but a match between Saori and Shion!
