- Only Kaibara dies from the attempted suicide but Sanae survives and is admitted in the Kumada District Hospital in a coma. When she wakes up, she has no memory of what happened for the past three years and believes that she is still seventeen years old.
- Reika, who is Sanae's attending physician, confers with Hirata regarding the patient's condition. In the course of their discussion, Reika mentions that the fire was probably not part of the suicide plan.
- Taro and Masayuki are at the hospital, trying to see Professor Komagusu. Reika sees them and appraises them of the professor's condition as well as that of Makoto's mother.
- Meanwhile, Makoto goes to see Sanae, who, due to her psychological condition, mistakes her for Hideo, Makoto's dad. Makoto runs away from her when she holds out her hand, revealing her slashed wrist.
- Taro and Masayuki, still at the hospital, see Miyako and her mom coming out of the ICU. Taro is still unable to say her name fully and Miyako acts like she does not know them.
- Makoto goes back to the burned ruins of Kaibara's house to look for something (presumably his knife, which his mother used to slash her wrist). Kei finds him and asks him about his mom. However, she also starts crying as she says that he's (Kaibara) gone.
- In the hospital, Masayuki and Taro have decided to split up. While Taro goes after Miyako, Masayuki would look for Makoto. Masayuki eventually finds Makoto on a boat at the small dock near his mother's place.
- Meanwhile, Taro has found Miyako but is unable to approach her.
- After his talk with Masayuki, Makoto decides to go back to the hospital. He stands outside his mother's room for a moment but then walks away. In the corridor, he finds Taro standing outside the waiting area where Miyako and her mom are sitting.
- Taro tells Makoto what he found out about the kidnapping, only to find that Makoto already knew. Before he realizes it, Taro starts confiding to Makoto, crying all the while.
- The next morning, Makoto wakes up to his mother putting a blanket over his shoulders. Without realizing it, he calls her "mother" and the word seems to trigger Sanae's memory back and she smiles while her tears fall. The scene closes with a close up of Makoto, also crying.
COMMENTS:
Well, this was an interesting episode. Don't let the summary fool you. The melodrama is not cheesy at all. But first, let's discuss the opening scene.
That was Sanae (or her spirit, at least), walking towards what looked to me like the abandoned hospital at the bottom of the dam. But the whole place is very dark. I wonder if that means anything.
I thought it was absolutely interesting watching that scene where Sanae mistakes Makoto for his father, and she acts all like a seventeen-year-old girl, blushing and stuff. The dissociative amnesia she goes through must feel very strange for Makoto.
Although this episode was all about Makoto, I'm curious about Miyako. She's acting very strange this episode, like she might be possessed or something, although it could only be that she's numb from her recent harrowing experience.
Also, Kei is suddenly given depth and I can't see why. Well, yes, she's a likeable character but she's a side character who only seems to be related to the whole story because she works for Taro's father. To suddenly, portray another side of her character by giving her unrequited feelings towards Kaibara (who is himself a side character) seems...I don't know.
But I'm not complaining, really. This just goes to show that while the story focuses on the three boys and Miyako, it does not mean that the side characters are any less significant. They live their own lives and they have feelings too and all their drama and all the main characters' drama are more interlinked than people initially believe.
