Casshern Sins 04: Fighting Girl

IN A NUTSHELL: Casshern meets a girl who lives to fight.
EPISODE 04: The Angel of Ruin

A young robot girl goes around challenging robots to fight with her. Although her name is Sophita, all the other robots call her the "Angel of Ruin" and are afraid of her. One large robot who shall henceforth be known as "Bob" tries to advise her to stop but there's no talking to Sophita. Finally, he resolves that once he gets a new arm, he will cut Sophita to pieces. The threat seems to go right over Sophita's head and she even seems excited at the prospect.

fight with me

Sophita eventually meets Casshern and like the rest, she takes to his "new" appearance immediately. She manifests her delight at meeting him by challenging him to a fight. But Casshern, who is still unable to accept his past, refuses to do so. This does not deter Sophita, however, as she continues to dog him around.
philosophies clash

Casshern wanders into the territory of a bunch of hostile robots. Sensing him as a threat, the robots try to fight him but Sophita arrives. The robots recognize her but before they can flee from her, Sophita slices them to pieces.

I'll follow you until you stop

Casshern also does his own fighting, ending up killing more robots than Sophita. Upon seeing him fight, Sophita wants even more to fight with him. Casshern asks her why she fights and Sophita reveals that it is only through fighting that she feels alive. Casshern does not understand this so again, he refuses her challenge.
i can't brood properly if people keep following me around

When Sophita continues to follow him, Casshern finally tells her that unlike her, he sees no reason to fight. The two of them will never understand each other.

a duel with words

Casshern's continued refusal to fight hurts Sophita. She declares that this is why she hates words.
i accept your challenge

Having left Casshern's side, Sophita finds herself lured into a trap set up by Bob and his robot minions.

i live for this sort of thing

But instead of cowering in fear, Sophita relishes the ensuing fight. She makes short work of small fry but Bob is a bit of a challenge. Bob's body is apparently too hard for Sophita's saber to do much damage.
to the rescue

As Bob prepares to deal Sophita an especially hard blow, someone blocks it for her. She looks up, shocked to see Casshern use his own arm to block the blow.

pacifist

Sophita expresses her alarm over Casshern's wound but he just says that it always heals...unfortunately. Bob then reveals that he purposely used Sophita as bait in order to lure Casshern in. It appears that he has heard of the rumor about Casshern's immortality. But upon seeing Casshern for himself, he quickly realizes that this is not a fight he can win. When he retreats, Casshern makes no move to stop him.
he heals

Later that evening, Sophita witnesses Casshern's body healing itself. Seeing him, she begins to understand a little of the reason for his sorrow. She declares that she loves him and because of that, she is going to fight him.

i love you so i will kill you

Afraid that he might turn into his murderous self, Casshern again tries to get her to stop.
pose!
But Sophita would not listen. She reveals that fighting is the only way for her to show her emotions.

i didn't harm you

Finally, even Casshern refuses to make any sort of defense from her relentless attacks. Sophita manages to stab him in the chest. She backs away slowly, surveying her work with a smile when suddenly her tears start to fall. This surprises her as she thought that she was helping him by ending his misery.
an odd sort of love

Casshern says that he is glad he didn't harm her. He repeats this several times until Sophita helps him remove the saber from his body and hugs her to him. Later, Sophita asks for his name, saying that he is no longer her opponent. After she leaves, Casshern muses that he perhaps just met the only living person in this world.
COMMENTS:

I just watched the 2004 live-action movie adaptation of this series. I might post a review about it soon so I won't talk about it here. One thing the movie did do for me is to make a few things clearer.

Still, I wish Casshern would stop brooding. I mean, brooding heroes are love...for the first two episodes, but it has to end some time. I want action, damnit! Or at least some semblance of a plot, because right now, this series is sorely lacking in that department.

Anyhoo, this episode was actually pretty good. It doesn't lack for action although some of them are so silly I kind of fail to see the point. Even the heavy dialogue, which I think were meant to sound profound, bordered on the cheesy department. Yes, I pretty much get that all that Sophita wants is to fight because that's the only way she can tell people how she feels, but for the love of god stop repeating the same thing over and over.

The previews look promising though. At last, the pink-haired girl and Ringo will make an appearance. On a side note: there seems to be an abundance of pink-haired girls this season. I don't know if that's an anime thing but it's kind of disturbing. XD
