Ga-Rei - Zero 02: All About Samurai School Girls

IN A NUTSHELL: The Ministry of Environment dips their hands on the phenomenal volume of supernatural disasters all over the city but what do they do when the enemy is a former comrade?
EPISODE 02: Manifestation of Hatred

The evening is far from over. A new supernatural disaster source appears around the Ichiyama City section and the Ministry of Defense's First Special Combat Squadron literally has its hands full. The Ministry of Environment sends in its Disposal Unit, the members of which all have the ability to see supernatural disaster sources without the aid of seekers.

I feel like I shouldn't even bother with their names anymore. They have very short shelf lives.

They arrive at the scene just as the last remaining forces from the First Special Combat Squadron are almost overrun by a combination of Categories A and a regenerated Category B Kasha. Together, the members of the Disposal Unit lure the Kasha to a predetermined area, where one of their comrades is waiting.
this one needs a name though: Kagura

Kagura, who looks like a school girl but carries a sword with the word "Michael" inscribed on the hilt, waits under a bridge. Not long after, her teammates arrive with the Kasha right at their heels. They trap the Kasha behind a barrier. With nowhere else to go, the Kasha charges towards the lone girl, who only draws her sword and "purifies" it.

I liked the Fourth Division but they done and killed them -- ooh, zombies!

In the aftermath, the Ministry of Defense assesses the damage -- more than half of their forces are gone, including the Fourth Division. Suddenly, two women, one in a wheelchair, enter the room and interrupt the supposedly top-secret meeting. They identify themselves as from the Ministry of Environment's Supernatural Disaster Countermeasure Division -- Jinguuji Ayame, the Chairman (wheelchair chick) and her secretary, Nikaidou Kiri. Basically, they're proposing to join forces with the Ministry of Defense in order to address the problem.
ok, that's cute

While the bureaucrats are busy discussing politics, the Disposal Unit and their teammates find themselves faced with another problem. Many of their dead comrades have turned into zombies, identified as Category D. Meanwhile, Ayame and Kiri are watching the Fourth Division's last moments recorded on video when they recognize a familiar figure. At the same time, Kagura gets a phone call from an old friend: Isayama Yomi, the samurai school girl who singlehandedly massacred the Fourth Division.

Apparently, she and Kagura are good friends, being colleagues under the Disposal Unit. However, Yomi disappeared six months ago while on a mission with the team and was never heard of again -- until now. What's worse, she's brought a friend with her -- a nue. Ayame classifies her as Category A and orders the team to "purify" her.

if this isn't hate, this is one passive-aggressive love

Kagura and Nori, a fellow teammember who owns a white squirrel-shaped familiar, are tasked to go after Yomi while their other teammembers handle the rest. While they search for Yomi in an underground tunnel, it is revealed that Yomi is Nori's fiancee. But this does not stop Yomi from presumably killing him and then going after Kagura next.

At first, Kagura hesitates and tries to reach her friend but Yomi is too far gone. When Kagura has her pinned to the ground, with a sword to her neck, Yomi reveals how she has always been jealous of Kagura for being stronger and how her jealousy has now turned into hate. Kagura barely escapes a gas explosion, which she causes herself because she can't bear to cut her own friend. But it seems Yomi has managed to escape with barely a scratch. With the help of the nue, Yomi holds Kagura captive, promising to end her pain soon. Kagura just cries, asking why she's doing this. She calls her "sister." For some reason, this angers Yomi even more, raising her sword as she shouts for her to never call her that.
COMMENTS:

I'm beginning to suspect that this might be one show where all the characters have an average shelf life of one episode. So far, the only recurring characters are the dudes at the Ministry of Defense and, of course, Yomi. Then again, this is only the second episode. Maybe we'll see more of the lesbians -- err, I mean, Ayame and Kiri later, and of course, Yomi. Right now, she's the only character that I believe I'm supposed to like...since all the characters from the first episode (whom I liked very much, by the way) died.

That said, maybe I shouldn't even like any of these characters since they're all probably expendable. It's like, it's not monster-of-the-week but more like protagonist-later-dead-character-of-the-week!

The action...not so awesome this episode, although you can never really go wrong with samurai school girls. No panty shots though. Believe me, because I was seriously considering putting the screencap up on this blog until concern for space made me reconsider.

I totally made a mistake. I thought that one-liner at the end of the episode (Can you kill someone you love because of love?) is NOT the title of Episode 01. The real title is in Japanese and the subbers did not translate it so I can't help you with that.

Anyhoo, despite the shocking character deaths, this series is still very interesting. I think maybe it's become interesting because now I can spend half the time guessing which character's gonna die a horrible death. The writers do not even discriminate between characters with possible important backstories and the rest.

Next week, maybe we'll see brandnew characters to dissect.
