A group of pirates has just made a large loot of gold but their celebration is cut short when Lina Inverse and her loyal buddy, the swordsman Gourry Gabriev, arrive to kick their ass to submission. Then comes a hilarious self-introduction -- hilarious, because only Lina seems to be aware of her grand reputation.
The pirates put up some resistance, at first, even as Lina uses her awesome sorceress skills and throws gigantic fireballs at their ship. Not satisfied with that, she even rams her ship right into the pirate ship. But the pirates finally surrender when a mermaid that they took as hostage recognizes Lina and relates to them all the horror stories that this evil and malignant sorceress has wrought on villages upon villages.
Meanwhile, not far away from where Lina and Gourry are wreaking havoc, Amelia and Zelgadis are secretly observing them. There's a man on board their ship who seems to be looking for Lina. Ever helpful, Amelia comes to Lina's "rescue" by shooting cannonballs at the pirate ship, nearly sinking it -- with Lina and Gourry still in it.
After some scuffles, which include a happy reunion between the four friends and the pirates slipping away on a life raft and then getting blown-up by a humongous fireball for cracking a joke about Lina's nonexistent bust, Lina and Gourry end up in a seaport city where they once again meet up with Amelia and Zelgadis.
However, it turns out that the man who was looking for Lina is actually an inspector looking to arrest her. He even has an entire battalion of fully-armored soldiers waiting outside in case Lina puts up some resistance. Lina, of course, flattens them with a single blast and then uses the moment to try to make a quick get-away.
Then follows a side-splitting scene of Lina Amelia, Zelgadis, Gourry (who is continually trying to fix his sword) and an emo mermaid being chased by a huge turtle tank (with the speed of a turtle...guess how they manage to outrun it?) all through the city. Finally, Zelgadis figures out the turtle tank's weakness and instructs Lina and Amelia to attack it from underneath. The attack disables the tank, but just when Lina begins to make the finishing move, another sorcerer recites the incantation for the "Dragon Slave Spell," blowing the entire city to smithereens. Lina, however, only seems to be rattled by the fact that her big finale is ruined by a nobody.
COMMENTS:
Yeah, so I was just re-watching Paprika and got wowed again by the woah-ness of this movie, and I thought: hey, wait a minute, wasn't it Hayashibara Megumi who voiced both Paprika and Atsuko? And then I was like: I wonder what new projects she's working on. So that's how I found Slayers Revolution.
I am, of course, aware that this isn't a new series, technically speaking. The Slayers franchise has been around for years, if the art style is any indication. As a matter of fact, I've seen Tagalog-dubs of it. Sure, I didn't really pay attention to it but now I'm wanting for some Hayashibara Megumi and this, it seems, is the only current project she has.
It certainly is funny -- the slapstick kind. I am one of those people who always laugh at scenes intended by writers to be funny, so you know, when it comes to comedys, I am fairly easy to please. Even though I enjoyed this first episode, I'm not likely picking this up.
