More Screencaps from Macross Frontier 20
Yeah, so last episode, Klan asked Mikhail where his heart was. Klan, I'm sure it's still in his chest cavity. Otherwise, he wouldn't be standing there, talking to you.
Meanwhile, Ranka had her heart broken by the sight of Sheryl and Alto doing the nasty together. What? Nah, I'm kidding. They're just hugging each other because after running up six flights of stairs, Sheryl is feeling a little light-headed.
Apparently, it must be some flight of stairs because after climbing it herself and climbing back down, Ranka is also feeling light-headed. With no Alto to catch her though, she ends up planting her face right on the floor. SPLAT!
Of course, it hurts, silly. Floors are solid objects.
Meanwhile, the assassin has President Glass in his sniper's scope. But then, just before he can squeeze the trigger, something blocks his vision. He looks up to find a second stage Vajra hovering over him. In the next instant, a random middle school students notices something sticky and wet drop on her head. When she checks it, she is horrified to find that is blood. Just then, the assassin's corpse falls from the rooftop. She screams but the sound is drowned by the sudden eruption of gunshots.
Inside Leon's super secret chamber of treasonous plots and hidden agendas, he reveals his true face to Cathy and breaks his engagement with her. Cathy is all "you can stuff your engagement up your ass. I'm with Ozma now. He's got sexier facial hair." But Leon's triumph is short-lived because he gets a call just then from none other than the supposed-to-be-dead-by-sniper-bullet President Glass. After hearing that the President is still alive, Ozma swings into action, making short work of two soldiers while Cathy elbows one soldier in the face. Then, the two of them scramble out of there.
Back in the Stairs of Light-headedness and Heartbreaks, Ranka is being sad and mopey because of her broken heart, while outside, second stage Vajra are wreaking havoc all over the city. They seem to respond to her Emotional Distress Signal (TM).
Alto shoots at the Vajra, using his toy gun. When that doesn't work, he goes to Ranka and begs her to sing her song and save all of them. But Ranka, who is wallowing in self-pity, is not exactly in a state to sing. She declares that she does not want to be used as a tool against the Vajra. Sadly, all artists are tools as Sheryl aptly points out by beating the crap out of her.
Actually, she just slaps her and forces the younger girl to face reality. Then, she says that she (Sheryl) knows how it feels to sing with one's heart in a song, but she (Ranka) is a professional so she has to act like a professional.
After hearing Sheryl's Awesome Words of Wisdom (TM), Ranka's confidence is renewed. But inside, she still hurts, so instead of calming the Vajra down with her song, she unconsciously instigates them into aggression. No one has any idea why Ranka's song isn't working. Not even Leon. Only Grace seems to have the answer although it doesn't look like she's about to share her suspicions to anyone yet.
In space, the Macross battleship is alerted to multiple folds as more and more Vajra arrive to reinforce the ones inside the spaceship. Captain Wilder orders his people to attack. The crew watches in horror as one of their battleships explodes.
Meanwhile, the second stage Vajra are really laying waste to the entire city. Fortunately for the humans, these Vajra are not yet immune to ordinary weapons so they manage to just barely hold the line. Alto and company decide to go back to the SMS headquarters in order to take out the big guns. But the only big weapons they have are Valkyrie-types. Klan, however, thinks that this is enough (with the help of a macronization chamber, she should be able to put up a strong fight).
Just then, a beam from a Vajra hit the area near them, injuring Nanase's left eye and forcing her and Shery away from Alto's group. As Alto prepares to rescue them, Sheryl tells him that they're fine and that he should go and put an end to the chaos. Her immortal words: "WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?"
Uh, Oprah?
With that, Alto and company start for SMS. Ranka stands around for a bit, looking absolutely dazed, until Alto comes back and grabs her hand. The warmth of Alto's hand sharply brings back a piece of Ranka's childhood memory: that of Brera.
Meanwhile, Brera is frantically scouring the city, looking for Ranka. When he finally finds her, he is ordered by Grace to get his ship and take care of the Vajra attack in space. She tells him that the Vajra are not going to hurt their "little queen." When Brera doesn't look like he's about to follow her order, Grace threatens to put him on force mode. Left with no choice, Brera accesses his ship's mainframe through his mind.
President Glass manages to escape a sniper's bullet and evade the hundreds of Vajra that gave him chase throughout the city but falls in a hail of bullets, courtesy of Leon and his harem. Ozma and Cathy arrive too late. All that's left of President Glass is his bullet-riddled body. Cathy falls to her knees.
Alto's group manage to make it outside the SMS headquarters. While Luca hacks the security doors, Mikhail and Alto provide cover and Klan takes her clothes off in preparation for her macronization (apparently, it's SOP). Just as Klan takes her top off, she has the sudden urge to pursue her earlier conversation with Mikhail. Don't ask why. So she turns to him and asks him where he keeps his heart.
But instead of taking her seriously, Mikhail gives a flippant answer, prompting Klan to give him a Zentrandi punch in the gut. Then, she plants a kiss on him, and everybody, including Mikhail, is beside themselves with shock and embarrassment. Before Mikhail could make a proper comment (whether the kiss needed more tongue or not), Klan runs out of there at incredible speed.
Meanwhile, Sheryl manages to bring the injured Nanase to a shelter. She joins a whole herd of other desperate, fear-laden humans, among whom are the husband and child of Canaria. These people are confused, wondering why their songstress of hope (Ranka) hasn't done anything to save them. As she listens to them complain, Sheryl gets her own wake up call and realizes that even while Ranka radiates hope for the people, she, Sheryl Nome, will sing for them amid despair.
Diamond Crevasse has never been more beautiful than in this episode.
With Sheryl's song playing in the background, the valiant defenders of Macross continue to fight the Vajra. In her cockpit, Canaria pauses to look at a picture of her son, as if to gather courage, and then with a mighty shout, she pulls out the canons on her ship and starts blasting away. All this while Ozma puts his arms around a devastated Cathy
Inside the SMS headquarters, Klan is inside the macronization chamber but it would take a while for the process to complete. Mikhail, who is guarding the entrance with Alto, says that he would gladly give his life for the one that he loves. At that moment, Vajra manage to get through the roof, forcing Mikhail to fly above the macronization chamber to get them away from Klan. He does not notice a Vajra attacking him from the side. He takes it in the stomach and throws up blood. But he still fights and empties the rest of his bullets into the Vajra's body, killing it. Then as he floats above Klan, he tells her that he loves her too, just as the airlocking device kicks in and forces his body out into space.
COMMENTS:
This episode was so sad. Death episodes are always sad. But this was made worse by the awesome song, which I now hate (because it's so good and yes, I know I'm not making sense. shut up).
What will happen to Klan now? I totally wasn't expecting Mikhail to die (by the way, he's also called Michael or Michel). Word: character development. Make that two words. Klan is totally going to get awesome this episode.
The significance of this episode, in terms of plot, is the Vajra's reaction to Ranka's emotions. So it's not her song, but the emotions that riddle her song. She is psychologically linked to them somehow. But why? I'm beginning to think the Vajra started out as benign creatures that were horribly experimented on and turned into monsters.
There's something significant about Sheryl's earrings. Or rather, the stone that her earring is made of.
Ozma and Cathy FTW! Now that the Mikhail x Klan ship is going nowhere.
