Sheryl Nome starring May'n - Universal Bunny (Macross F Movie Mini-album)

RELEASED: 11.25.2009
LABEL: Victor Entertainment
TRACKLIST:
1. Universal Bunny
2. pink monsoon
3. Gira Gira Summer
4. Izorado
5. Ae nai Toki
6. Eien
7. Obelisk
8. Tenshi ni Nachatta (universal version)

No posts for Armed Librarians today because the fansub is just out and I haven't downloaded the latest episode (10) yet. So instead, I give you this treat.

Universal Bunny is the first mini-album by Sheryl Nome starring May'n. It's connected with the theatrical release of the first Macross Frontier movie adaptation. All music is again composed by Yoko Kanno-sensei with lyrics written by Gabriela Robin and other collaborators.

The album's title track, Universal Bunny, is a rock song but still playful and has enough bubblegum in it so as to make no mistake that this is a Sheryl Nome song. Also included is pink monsoon which was released as Sheryl Nome's debut single before the movie came out. pink monsoon is more flirtatious with a seductive beat and May'n sounding more and more like Britney Spears so if you like that, then you'll like the track. Gira Gira Summer, by contrast, is very happy, very pop it's sickening. The album touches back on its rock beginnings with Izorado before slipping on its dainty slippers for the soft piano piece that is Ae nai Toki. I half-expected Eien to take after its preceding track but instead I was met with heavy guitar riffs for an intro and May'n singing with a slightly guttural voice. Style-wise, it's strangely reminiscent of Diamond Crevasse although the sounds couldn't be more different. Obelisk is a nice pop song that sounds like Christmas at the intro but quickly transforms itself into a melodious rock number. Tenshi ni Nachatta (universal version) is my favorite from the mini-album because it shows me the softer, stripped-down side of May'n's voice.

All in all, this is a good album. It showcases May'n's range as a singer, a regular universal bunny indeed. And of course, Yoko Kanno-sama is still a genius.

2008 Year-Ender Anime "Best" List

So here I am with Part 2 of my 2008 year-ender report. This time, the list contains the "best" animes to come out in 2008. I use the year loosely, of course, as some of the titles -- Ghost Hound, in particular -- actually started airing in 2007.

Anyhoo, the title in bold is the winner and the other titles inside the parentheses are runner-ups.

Best Dark Series

Ghost Hound is comparable to classic dark series LIKE Serial Experiments Lain and Boogiepop Phantom. While the narrative of Ghost Hound is not as loopy or nonlinear as the other two, its theme of the spiritual/supernatural world disrupting reality echoes the general themes of the two titles I just mentioned. On top of that, Ghost Hound is sci-fi. Or at least, in some aspects, it's sci-fi because it deals with psychology and scientific concepts like electromagnetic fields of the earth and the human psyche but it's also a philosophical piece in its dealings with theology and the spiritual aspect of culture. In truth, however, Ghost Hound can be viewed as a simple coming-of-age story with a psychological twist.

Best Comedy Series

I did not expect much from Toradora. After all, I did stop blogging the series after two episodes. I thought the characters were stereotypical, the plot rehashed, and the theme predictable. But, after suddenly picking up the series one random day, I found I was right yet wrong in every way. Toradora is exactly what it says it is and then some. In an era where farce in anime is all but overused, this series is refreshing in its absolute disregard for trend. It's comedy but it's not farce. It's the sort of anime that can afford to be clever without necessarily making fun of its characters. Or it does poke fun at its characters but never reaches that point where the humor becomes scathing. It's just good old fun, the way light series of this kind have always been before the "farce" trend started cropping up.

Best Production Value

From the beginning, Real Drive has impressed me with its animation quality, the extensive use of background colors (the series uses some of the widest palettes I've ever seen in an anime), and the beautiful character designs. Sure, there is the obligatory recap episode but even that one made use of entirely new scenes. In terms of sounds, Real Drive also delivers. The soundtrack is not good as a standalone piece but used in the anime it has a life of its own. The series is never complete without the auditory experience. Don't get me wrong. Real Drive has its moments, and even now, I'm still not sure if I "get" the entire picture. But what it might lack in terms of plot cohesion, it more than makes up for its excellent production.

Best Opening Theme
"Poltergeist" by Mayumi Kojima (Ghost Hound)

No doubt Ghost Hound has one of the more unique anime openers to date. "Poltergeist" not only fits the "ghost" themes of the anime but also reflects the gray murky tone of the storyline. And jazz, baby! The series creator was right about jazz for this anime.

Best Ending Theme
"Diamond Crevasse" by Sheryl Nome starring May'n (Macross Frontier)

Macross Frontier has some of the best vocal pieces in the 2008 anime line-up. But, of course, it's Yoko Kanno. Unfortunately, I'm not so inclined towards space opera -- of which, much of Macross Frontier themes are made up of -- so the OST does not make it to my top soundtrack. Still, I say it again that Macross Frontier offers some of the best songs. Out of all these, the one that comes out at the top is "Diamond Crevasse." It's a beautiful song as it is but the way it was used in Episode 20 of the series did me in.

Best Voice Cast

The series features my all-time favorite seiyuu, Toyoguchi Megumi, and even though she's a side character my love for the cast was long cemented the minute I found out she plays Klan Klang. Macross Frontier should also be commended for discovering a budding new seiyuu and recording artist in the person of Nakajima Megumi. Here's to hoping she'll make it far in the business.

Best Soundtrack

Ryouko's Case Files is one of those animes that you just can't take seriously. Much like its main character, Ryouko, the series has virtually no substance but is sexy and titillating and if that isn't enough, it fans the flames further with mystery and fanservice. As for its soundtrack, it's sexy jazz music that's surprisingly good. So good in fact that it managed to steal the top spot from Macross Frontier.

Best Art/Animation

Surprise! A mecha anime. Actually, I don't have anything serious against mecha but if I can help it, I usually avoid them. Then this series came along and I was swept off my feet with its brilliance. Xam'd: Lost Memories isn't even mecha in the sense that the Xam'd creature is actually a fusion between two living organisms: a human and a "hiruko." So it's not a machine but rather two consciousness sharing a symbiotic connection. The concept is wow and the art and animation more than delivers the goods.

Best Background Art

Natsu no Sora cheats a little with its use of live photos, but the idea is so clever that I can't help but admire it for sheer ingenuity of the creators alone. The wonderfully detailed background is emphasized even more by the focus on landscapes and buildings and the deliberately over-simplified character designs.

Best Concept

I honestly loved the idea of Library War. I like its revolutionary use of the war theme and giving it such an insane twist that you're torn between laughing your ass off or taking the dystopic theme with a grim face. But most of all, I like the "what-if" question it dangles in front of its viewers.

Best Overall Series

Because Ghost Hound is the only "finished" 2008 anime that lived up to my expectations, it makes it to my top "Best Overall." Not that Eve no Jikan or Xam'd: Lost Memories didn't come close. But the latter two are ONAs so they are on a wholly different level. Come 2009, it's going to be a close fight between Eve and Xam'd. I wonder which one will most deliver.

And that, my friends, spells the end of my year-ender spree. Coming up are first impressions of the Winter 2009 shows.

2008 Year-Ender Anime Rankings

I forgot to mention that on the 7th of December, Animeshoon officially turned a year older! (cue: fireworks ~) But I'm not a sentimental person and stuff like a blog's birthday usually flies over my head, so that (aside from occasional bouts of amnesia) explains the silence. Still, to celebrate my coming back to life after the Christmas and New Year hiatus, I've decided to compile a year-ender report for 2008. Mind you, I'm not good at this so please excuse the suckage.

Before I begin though, I would like to say outright that my blogging list does not necessarily reflect my watchlist. Weird, huh? But that's me. That said, on to the list ~ ♥

Top 5 Highly Anticipated Series
  1. Blade of the Immortal - I thoroughly enjoyed the manga series so I thought the anime might prove to be a great experience as well
  2. Ghost Hound - the darkly psychological themes interested me but it was the art that got me first
  3. Spice and Wolf - I was intrigued by the concept of fantasyslashtrade&economics
  4. Kurozuka - I thought it was a love epic with vampires in it and the time-leaps piqued my interest
  5. Shikabane-Hime - Aka - the promo said that the main character is an undead and I have a thing for the undead -- zombies specifically
Top 5 Series with the Best First Episode
  1. Ga-Rei - Zero - because nothing beats killing all your characters in the first episode
  2. Xam'd: Lost Memories - the series' best assets -- great OP and ED themes, excellent pacing, interesting cast of characters, and a simply brilliant storyline -- can be readily seen from the first episode
  3. Ghost Hound - the focus on sound distortion and the dark, mangly themes gave me goosebumps; production value was tops as well
  4. Blade of the Immortal - the series's first episode does a good job juggling character revelation and an ass-kicking, bloody fight scene
  5. Kure-nai - the first episode implies a lot of heavy stuff and yet has just enough quirkiness to keep you coming back for more
Top 5 Series with the Best Finale
  1. Ghost Hound - I seriously did not want the series to end
  2. Kure-nai - yes, it was corny and ridiculous, but people got beat up and wise words were spoken, and overall it gave a satisfying feeling
  3. Real Drive - after muddling a lot of the episodes, the neat and tidy ending is refreshing
  4. Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musumetachi - ohmygod, there was SECKS and then more SECKS and then lots of people die, it was just WOW
  5. World Destruction - a spectacular ending to a rather bland show; it surprised me
Top 5 Random-picked Series that Turned Out Great
  1. Natsume Yuujin-chou - something about the slice-of-life approach to a gentle storyline riddled with fantasy reminds me of Mushi-shi
  2. Xam'd: Lost Memories - a mecha series that I actually enjoy because it's mecha
  3. Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ~ Natsu no Sora - another slice-of-life series that surprised me with its subtle depth
  4. Eve no Jikan - the two-month wait is so worth 15 minutes of pure genius
  5. Kure-nai - I like it mainly for its quirkiness
Top 5 Favorite Titles
  1. Eve no Jikan - yes, only three episodes are out but every single one of them has been nothing short of excellent, leaving me with no doubt that the next trio are going to be just as spectacular
  2. Ghost Hound - a coming-of-age story that manages to delve deep into parapsychology, science and the supernatural at the same time
  3. Xam'd: Lost Memories - the excellent pacing gives plenty of room for character development and boy what development!
  4. Real Drive - a series that suffered from its slice-of-life approach but still managed to deliver in the end
  5. Kurozuka - it knows it has nothing going for it other than pure, unadulterated violence in a simple plot that is unabashedly too straightforward for a mystery
Top 3 Favorite Female Characters
  1. Yayoi (Kure-nai) - I like her mainly because she is the only serious (not to mention capable) character in a series that does not take itself, let alone its characters, seriously
  2. Otono-Tachibana Makie (Blade of the Immortal) - Hyakurin will likely steal her place but until the series actually gets to that point in the manga, Makie remains on the top 3
  3. Isayama Yomi (Ga-Rei - Zero) - because she's badass

Top 3 Favorite Male Characters
  1. Manji (Blade of the Immortal) - he's tough, he's rude, he's freakin' immortal!
  2. Takehara Akiyuki (Xam'd: Lost Memories) - a main character that I don't find annoying, what are the chances?
  3. Kuro (Kurozuka) - strange how a one-dimensional, flat, stereotypical character managed to make it to this list but Kuro manages to be all that and still maintains a semblance of respectability (meaning: you can't laugh at the poor vampire boy - HE WILL CUT YOUR HEAD)
Top 3 Funniest Characters
  1. Michael Kohaku (Ga-Rei - Zero) - his crazy outfit did it
  2. Toppi (World Destruction) - who didn't like the bear?
  3. Makoto / Mako-chan (Minami-ke Okawari) - cross-dressing boys is one thing, a cross-dressing boy who actually secretly likes to cross-dress is another
Top 3 Favorite Villains
  1. Otono-Tachibana Makie (Blade of the Immortal) - the reluctant murderer, the hesitant prostitute, the very thing that makes her feel conflicted is what makes her character fascinating; Anotsu Kagehisa, however, is a close runner-up if the fan-subs were any faster
  2. Isayama Yomi (Ga-Rei - Zero) - because she's badass
  3. Furuichi (Xam'd: Lost Memories) - nothing like a psychotic villain to make my day; and his Xam'd form is fugly as hell
Top 3 Favorite Couples
  1. Sora and Gouta (Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ~ Natsu no Sora) - heart-warming, then heart-wrenching, then heart-warming
  2. Aoi Souta and Holon (Real Drive) - seeing the two of them together makes me feel all giddy inside; I especially like that their little romance isn't shoved in front of your face but remains on the side the whole time
  3. Takehara Ryuzo and Takehara Fusa (Xam'd: Lost Memories) - sure, Akiyuki and Haru are sweet but Ryuzo and Fusa are married, for god's sake! and they still manage to light up the sparks with their love-hate interactions
Favorite Crack Couple
Benikawa Ishuu and Tsunomata Raigyo (Xam'd: Lost Memories) - if only because they are both HAWT

(NOTE: Ryouko and Izumida (Ryouko's Case Files) shared lots of sexy passive-aggressive moments on-screen but surprisingly they're not as smoldering hot as Ishuu and Raigyo and the bath conversation)

Favorite Slash Couple
Asogi Rin and Laura (Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musumetachi) - let's get one thing straight: they're not a couple, but wouldn't it be fun though? with Laura constantly trying to BLOW UP Rin and Rin constantly trying to kill the living daylights out of Laura, such romance will never be boring

(NOTE: Mikhail and Alto (Macross Frontier) almost made it to the top but I can't say the two shared a moment together on screen quite like Rin and Laura did)

Part 2, with my list of "best" 2008 animes is up next....

I was a bit disappointed with the ending of Macross Frontier but I can totally understand why the writers felt like they had to end it that way. Some people took exception to the love triangle. In my case, it was the thing that finally got me hooked. Ironically enough, it's not the best thing about this series.

Macross Frontier has so much going for it -- production values, cgi, animated action sequences, character designs, art direction, and of course, the music. Who can forget the one thing that puts Macross Frontier a level above all other mecha animes out there?

Macross Frontier OST 2 delivers with new songs from fictional singers, Ranka Lee (Megumi Nakajima) and Sheryl Nome (May'n), plus great new tracks from the master herself, Yoko Kanno.

I strongly recommend High School Life, a jazzy guitar number that's reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop. This track is used as background music during episode previews. is this LOVE? is also an interesting track with Kanno weaving her electronica-slash-acoustic magic through a gorgeous string composition. Of course, there are the usual space opera music, beginning with Prologue F, picked up three tracks later by the marching band Transformation, sustained by Tsuioko no Trumpet, and culminating with the ominous largo, Battle Frontier.

But as with the first OST, the highlights are the vocal tracks. My current favorite is Anata no Oto by Ranka Lee=Megumi Nakajima. This song is featured as an insert song in Episode 20, also known as the episode that spoiled me for the rest of the series as it was so good, everything else PHAILed in comparison. Another insert song from the same episode is Shinkuu no Diamond Crevasse (Empty Diamond Crevasse), heartwrenchingly performed by Sheryl Nome starring May'n.

Triangler
is a duet cover of the OP theme song (originally by Sakamoto Maaya) by Megumi Nakajima and May'n. Again, I don't like the vocal combination of these two. They simply do not harmonize well. Listening to this song is like listening to someone dragging a fork and a knife against a porcelain plate over and over and over and over....

Yousei is a new song performed by broken Sheryl when she emo-es about the fact that she is about to die from her V-type infection. It feels very treated and too aware of itself. In contrast, Ao no Ether, the new song from Ranka feels too...floaty. It's one of the saddest compositions I have ever heard in this series and one of the most beautiful lyrics, too, but Megumi Nakajima doesn't quite hit the right emotion to give this song soul.

Oh well. It can't be helped, I guess. But all in all, this OST is good. It has two of my favorite tracks from the series, so that's gotta count for something. And anyway, opinions may differ. You may like what I consider less than extraordinary.

Macross Frontier 25 (Final)

And it ends....
Episode 25: Your Song

Picking up from the last episode, this is the long-awaited finale people. The Macross Frontier fleet is no match to the combined powers of the Sooper Siblings (TM) and the thousands of Vajra minions on their side. Even Klan and Alto fall. But just when the fleet thinks that all hope is lost, a silhouette appears.

so relieved to see you

on my order

fry the bitch

you're going down

It's the Macross Quarter come to save the day! Klan has never been more relieved to see Ozma, who wastes no time taking her destroyed ship in. But Luca is too shell-shocked to acknowledge his old commander, until Ozma gives him an order, referring to him as Skull-3 and then he remembers.

Captain Wilder opens communications with the Battle Command and spills the beans about the conspiracy between Leon Mishima and Grace O'Connor as well as the assassination of President Glass. Apparently, all the other commanders believe it was the Vajra responsible for his death. But another voice interrupts them: it's Alto! He's alive! He managed to eject himself out of his ship before it exploded. Sheryl is speechless from relief.

Alto figures out that the Giant Ranka is not the real Ranka Lee. They shoot the image down only to reveal that it was the Macross Galaxy all along. With this discovery, Leon's betrayal is out in the open. Cathy takes this chance to convince him to give up.
lol, tentacles

However, while all this is going on, Grace has reached the center of the Vajra queen and is beginning to connect herself to the network.

All at once, the crew of Macross Quarter detect a new fold wave.

Ranka finally awake
Alto means business

While Sheryl continues to sing, Alto tries to break through the thick defense around Macross Galaxy. The fold quartz earring that Sheryl gave him magnifies Sheryl's song, getting through to Ranka, who finally wakes up from her trance.

Klan on Mikhail's ship

finally, getting through

this battle is won

Klan, on Mikhail's ship, gives Alto cover while he and the others fight against the Vajra and ghost fighter ships from Macross Galaxy. Brera gets hit, causing the implant in his brain to break apart. This actually releases him from Grace's control.
too late?

Meanwhile, Grace has completed the connection. Through the queen, she is now in full control of the Vajra network, which spans galaxies.

commencing attack

Armed with her new powers, Grace commences a full-blown Vajra attack on all key human settlements, including Macross 11 and Macross City on Earth. But somewhere far away, a voice is softly singing "Aimo." It's Ranka Lee, the little queen!

Ranka's song is heard all over space, first causing confusion among the Vajra before turning them completely on the humans' side. With this new turn of events, Alto and the others renew the fight. Even Brera, now free from Grace's control, encourages Ranka to sing with all her heart.

A canon beam hits the deck of Macross Battleship where Sheryl is while Alto watches in shock. But Sheryl is alright and Ranka ends up helping her and even gives her a slap on the face as payback for Episode 22. Alto then asks Sheryl to lend her strength to him once more. Ranka then touches Sheryl's head and for some reason the V-type virus moves from her brain to her stomach, causing it to glow like Ranka's.

Now with both glowing Ranka and Sheryl working together, the fight is renewed. More Vajra turn to the humans' side. Alto and the rest shoot their way through Macross Galaxy again, with Brera's aid. Canaria likewise does heroics, providing Alto some cover while he fires a hole through the Galaxy. Once in, he quickly finds Ranka and takes her out with him to safety.

Grace makes the queen attack, targeting Island 1 of the Macross ship. However, the Vajra turn themselves into living shields to deflect the blow. Sheryl and Ranka both feel the pain as several Vajra die, but even more of them arrive to protect the human ships.

The friendlies now have their eyes turned on the Vajra queen. Brera tells Alto to target the stomach because that is where the Vajra's brain is located. With this helpful tip, Alto directs all his canons on the queen's stomach. Grace puts up a strong fight, even going as far as taking out the Macross Battleship's main canon. But the Macross Quarter under Captain Wilder's command breaks through her defenses. Klan then hands Alto Mikhail's V-F sniper gun and with this as a weapon, Alto finally takes out Grace.

explosive climax

beautiful

The Vajra queen explodes and the Vajra are suddenly motherless. Softly, Ranka begins to sing "Aimo," explaining that the song is not a warcry but a love song. Apparently, thousands of years ago, the Vajra used the song in order to call others like them from different parts of the universe to mate. Ranka's mother explained it to her when she was a child that the word means "Anata..."

In the aftermath of the war, the Macross Fleet lands on the Vajra home planet. Ranka, with the entire crew behind her, watch their first sunrise in a blue sky.
who do you kiss?

In the end, Ranka and Sheryl decide that they will continue to be rivals in both song and love. Like the perfect tool, Alto decides nothing, just enjoying his first flight through an infinite sky.
FINAL THOUGHTS:

It ends, people. While it's not the best ending around, it's all very convenient. Everybody's happy. I was happy. The action was great. Even the tentacle business with Grace was hilarious awesome. And in the end, nobody -- with the possible exception of Ozma and Cathy (yay!) -- ended up together. It ends with a beginning. Always a good ending for any story.

But I do feel like I missed something by not watching the original Macross installments. Because even now, I still don't understand the otaku Zentradi.

Not a huge fan of the Sheryl x Ranka mixed tapes. Great for action scenes but as standalone songs? Errr... I pass.

My initial love and adoration for the Macross songs is finally fading. I can go through a day now without wanting to listen to Diamond Crevasse.
