I decided not to blog about Episode 23 since nothing really major happened, except that apparently, Alto probably has feelings for Ranka but stays with Sheryl out of some actor's obligation to play a role that's expected of him. And then for some reason, while Alto resolves to kill Ranka for betraying them, Sheryl, who overhears the entire conversation, realizes that she's got nothing on the green-haired girl. Frankly, I can't see how wanting to kill someone can be interpreted as loving someone. But maybe in reverse world, that works.
what's with the glowy things??
Grace has really gotten a hold of the entire situation with Ranka as well as Brera. She seems to have the two siblings completely under control.
Meanwhile, the Macross Quarter sends its crewmen, Ozma, Cathy and Canaria on an expedition to find out more about what happened to the 117th Fleet. They find out that the leader of the research team is Dr. Mao Nome with Grace and Ranshe Mei, Ranka's mother, as team members. It turns out that Dr. Mao Nome is Sheryl's grandmother and that the earrings she always wears belongs to the Nome family.
It seems that Ranka's mother was among the first humans to get infected with the V-type virus and that she conceived Ranka without knowing this. This is probably the source of Ranka's power over the Vajra. Grace is trying to take advantage of this in order to create a fold network that would unite the entire universe into a single consciousness. But the catch is that the person who controls the network will emerge as the most powerful being of all. This is Grace's true objective.
wow, almost didn't recognize Alto there. And Luca, technically, that's rape, y'know
guess who's the sociopath and the megalomaniac
Back in Macross Frontier, the pilots are being briefed about their upcoming battle with the Vajra. Leon wants to seize the Vajra home planet and make it the new home for the humans. In order to get past the Vajra defenses, they plan on using Sheryl's voice to create confusion.
oh wow, that's such a nice allusion to the OP clip
After the briefing, Alto does not join the other pilots to get their ships ready. Instead, he drops by Sheryl's room and promises that her that he will come back. He adds that he will Ranka if it means saving the entire fleet. Sheryl is all subdued drama and instead tells him to go and save Ranka. In return, she asks that he does not tell her whatever it is he wants to tell her because no matter what, she won't be able to sing. Then, they kiss and ohmygod, I love these two. Afterwards, Sheryl gives him one of her earrings.
the war is on
these two have axes to grind
Sheryl dresses up in her concert outfit while Alto, Klan and Luca prepare for an all-out war. Sheryl's song immediately works and the Vajra are confused. But their victory is short-lived as Brera tells Ranka to sing her song.
Even with her V-type enhanced voice and outrageous outfits, Sheryl is no match for Ranka's power over the Vajra. As a matter of fact, her voice loses its effect the moment Ranka sings the first note to "Do You Remember Love?" Grace thinks the song is only fitting as it awakens the love that the Vajra have for their home planet.
While the Macross Frontier's attack force try to survive through the renewed aggression of the Vajra defenses, Grace takes advantage of the fold network that Ranka's voice creates in order to get to the queen.
grace and her alien mind-fucks
ohmygod, HOT!!!
Alto shouts Ranka's name but Brera blocks his path, telling him to stay away from his sister. Alto is momentarily shocked by this revelation. The two pilots fight it out. Klan joins in the dogfight but is hit by Brera's cannon. While Alto's attention is diverted, Brera shoots his ship.
giga-SHOCK
Alto's ship explodes right before Sheryl's eyes as she watches helplessly from the screen.
COMMENTS:
Uh, yeah. I wonder if they're going to do a second season or an OVA because it doesn't look like they can give the series a proper ending with just a 30-minute episode. Or maybe they can.
Maybe Alto should just die. That way, I don't have to agonize over who ends up with whom, because seriously.
I really don't think 'Do you remember love?' worked in that scene. It's one of my favorite songs from Ranka Lee, but that scene killed it. Nooooo!
Sheryl is so awesome. I just wanted to say that.
