MEME: 50 Questions

All three series I've been following this season have had their finale (although I should be posting my "first look" of Ozuma sometime this week), I've got nothing better to do now than to answer the latest anime meme that's been floating around in my blogroll. Fair warning, I am not an old hand at anime. Sure, I've watched it intermittently through the years but I have to say that I haven't been quite as avid as I seem to be now. And let's not forget my brief "break-up" with anime last November, which, thanks to Chihaya Furu, didn't last very long. Anyway, my point I guess is that this is probably not a very interesting meme.

1. Who is your favourite male anime character?

Saitou Hajime from Rurouni Kenshin. It helps that his character is actually based on a historical figure -- albeit one that's been bastardized too many times in many a Shinsengumi anime (yes, I'm looking at you, Hakuoki Shinsengumi Kitan!) His motto: Aku. Zoku. San. "Bring swift death to evil" is the stuff of heroic dreams. He is my hero. And when my other  Rurouni Kenshin  favorite, Sagara Sanosuke, leaves me alone, Saitou is usually there to take his place as my fanfic muse.

2. Who is your favourite female anime character?

Takani Megumi, also from Rurouni Kenshin. Oh, I know she isn't a popular character. In fact, many fans hate her for professing to steal Kenshin from Kaoru, her mean attitude towards Kaoru and to the other characters in general,  her generally obnoxious behavior, but I like to think that all of that are just a front for an emotionally damaged character. Sure, one can always argue that everybody in Rurouni Kenshin is damaged in one way or another -- everybody has lost someone -- but you can't quantify pain. You can't really judge people simply because they are suffering the same pain as the others or lesser pain. It's pain nonetheless and everybody reacts to them differently. She's just a fascinating character and I just love writing her in fanfiction.

3. What is your favourite anime soundtrack?

At the moment, I can't seem to stop listening to Chihaya Furu OST. It's a fine combination of traditional Japanese instrumental music and high-energy tracks. I especially love listening to it while driving on my way to or from work.

4. What is your favourite anime opening + animation?

Eden of the East had "Falling Down" by Oasis as its opening theme, a cool song that I still listen to from time to time, and its accompanied by an equally cool, very interesting and incredibly artistic animation sequence. Although I never really warmed to the series, I have to give it at least this much: it had so far the best animation sequence ever. Of interest are the opening songs for Mushishi and Durarara!!

5. What is your favourite anime ending + animation?

It's a tough choice between Xam'd: Lost Memories and virtually all the ending themes of Natsume Yuujin-chou series. In the end, I'd have to choose Xam'd because I loved the Kylee song and I can actually sing to it. But there are moments in Natsume Yuujin-chou where I couldn't help but feel like the ending theme provides the perfect clincher to a particularly satisfying episode. So in other words, it's a close call.

6. What is your favourite anime scene?

Wow, that's a tough one. A really tough one. Nothing comes to mind. Uh-oh. Let me get back to you on that one.

Let's see...

I can remember that scene in Macross Frontier where Sheryl Nome is running through the streets in the rain. She's something depressed. All around her are posters of the newest darling of the media, Ranka Lee. She slips and falls, right on a spoiled, water-damaged poster of herself. That was sad.

For the funny, I'll never forget that scene in  Arakawa Under the Bridge  where Recruit tried the princess hold on Nino. That made me laugh so much.

And finally, very recently, a scene in Natsume Yuujin-chou Shi brought tears to my eyes. It's where a young Takashi tries to run away from his foster family to look for his old home and on his way there, he keeps shouting out for his father and nobody answers.

I don't know if these are favorite scenes but I liked them well enough.

7. If you could meet an anime character, who would it be?

For the girls, Nino from Arakawa Under the Bridge. I don't know. She seems like a fun character to be with. Innocent to some degree and therefore gullible, yet somehow wise where it matters, unpredictable and probably completely insane. Yep. Sounds like my kind of gal. And if you ask, I am a bit of a Recruit myself, in terms of personality so there's the attraction.

For the boys, I guess I'd like to meet Okabe Rintarou, the self-proclaimed mad scientist in Steins;Gate. I'd be very interested what nickname he would bestow upon me.

8. What anime character is most similar to you in terms of personality?

A long, long time ago, I took this Bleach character quiz and came out as Kuchiki Rukia. So I guess that's the person I am most like. I am apparently tough as nails, crazy over the weirdest things, look up far too much to my big brother, and kind when least expected.

9. What is your favourite thing about anime?

The unusual stories they contain and the art to go with it. Mostly, it's the art that attracts me and draws me in but it's the stories that make me stay.

10. What is your least favourite thing about anime?

The obvious pandering to the audience, often at the cost of content. There are many quality anime out there. And for every quality anime, there are dozens that are utter crap so that sometimes I can't help but wonder why these things are even made. And then I look at the sales and things click into place.

11. Who’s your favourite anime couple?

Well, my all-time favorite fanfic pairing is Sagara Sanosuke and Takani Megumi from Rurouni Kenshin but they are sadly not canon. I also like Makie Otochibana and Anotsu Kagehisa from Blade of the Immortal but again, this coupling is not canon. Although very heavily hinted at, it's never explicitly stated in the manga or the anime. So I guess that leaves only Senjougahara and Araragi from Bakemonogatari and its not-exactly-sequel Nisemonogatari. It's an odd couple to begin with -- Senjougahara is...weird, for lack of a better word. A tsundere but not a typical one. She says the most outrageous things which could put off anyone, though not Araragi who is as stoic as they come. Their relationship dynamics is fascinating because if you understand a typical Japanese comedy duo: there's always the sbokken who says outlandish things and the straight one who brutally corrects his less-than-intelligent partner. But in the case of the this couple, the characterization is reversed because Senjougahara, though the more intelligent of the two, is the bokken and Araragi is the straight-laced partner. The two just complement each other and their growth both as individuals and as a couple is fascinating to see in the series.

12. Who is your favourite anime animal?

Densuke, the heroic virtual dog from Denno Coil. The human characters in the series were pretty generic and Densuke, despite being just a cyberdog, was the only one whom I really latched onto emotionally. And the fact that he saved the day for his owner and her friends, proving his loyalty and devotion, all but cemented my love for this wonderful cyberpet.

13. What anime would make a good game?

No idea. I don't play a lot of games and I don't really go around watching anime and wondering at the same time whether it would make a good game.

14. What game would make a good anime?

Refer to Answer 13.

15. What is the first anime you ever watched?

It was Voltron, I think. The one with the lion robots. My favorite was the black lion.

16. Do you think you’ll ever stop watching anime?

Not really. I may withdraw awhile from the genre but I don't think I'll ever really stop watching it. Maybe a time will come when they stop making animes that I like but if that time does come, I'd still have the old anime series I have and I can just re-watch them.

17. What is your favourite genre of anime?

Well, I like light, humorous fare with a little bit of everything. Let's see, if Natsume Yuujin-chou had romance in it, it would be the perfect anime for my taste. As it is, it comes short in that aspect.

18. What is your least favourite genre of anime?

Ecchi for the sake of ecchi. I don't get it.

19. Are you open about watching anime with people you know?

I've watched anime with people I know. Mostly my brother. But then, we have very different tastes. He watches mostly shounen stuff and he likes watching them over and over. I normally go through my anime only once -- maybe a couple of times for my absolute favorites but no more. So yeah, I guess I'm open to it but I prefer to watch on my own. It's more of a private past time anyway as none of my real life friends have any interest in it.

20. Have you ever been to Japan?

No, but I plan to. One of these days. I plan to tour all of Asia actually and Japan is definitely on the list.

21. What anime was the biggest letdown for you?

Occult Academy. I remember how I loved the very first episode and how that love got eroded with each episode that came after it until it was all I could do to keep from screaming at my screen. And I hated myself more for bearing it through the end.

22. What anime was better than expected?

Angel Beats! A friend of mine once recommended it to me but I wasn't sold on it. Then, later on, another friend lent me the DVD and one day I finally decided to watch it. Surprise, surprise. I enjoyed it immensely. I still occasionally listen to Girls Dead Monster on my phone.

23. What is the best anime fight scene?

Manji vs. Otochibana Makie in Blade of the Immortal. Actually, every fight scene with Makie was badass. The anime was too short but I'm still following the manga. It's nearing the end now and I think Makie might finally fall because of her illness but she will remain the strongest fighter in the series.

24. Who is your anime waifu?

It would have to be Busujima-sempai ♥ ~ from High School of the Dead. Yes, I'd swing that way if it's her. Definitely. No question about it. That apron outfit alone had me wondering about my orientation. lolz I guess there's the inner 12-year-old fanboy in every one of us.

25. What was your favourite video game as a child?

I remember playing Donkey Kong in Game & Watch and Super Mario Bros. in Family Computer. I also played a lot of Tetris as a child. I loved all those games.

26. Most embarrassing moment?

Too many to mention.

27. Can you drive?

Yes.

28. Are you mature?

I like to think I make mature decisions about relevant things in life but I don't know if I am a mature person.

29. What year were you born?

1984. I'm also a gemini so I'm forever young.

30. Do you prefer dogs or cats?

Dogs. Although I admire cats.

31. Describe yourself physically.

I'm 5'2" and about 100 lbs. I've recently put on a few pounds though because of a lack of exercise and the fact that I just got myself a car and now move around the city primarily by car. I look Chinese but I have brown skin, like most Filipinos.

32. What would you name your first child?

I'd name it after some European city. Venice, probably.

33. What is the worst injury you’ve ever had?

My mother once slammed the door of the car on my elbow. It was an accident but it hurt like seven hells. The worst part about it was that my mother actually scolded me for being careless. Good times, good times.
.
34. What is your worst habit?

I bite my fingernails.

35. Do you drink or smoke?

Neither. I used to smoke in fun but I never got a taste for it. And I'm a lightweight and don't really enjoy alcohol that much.

36. Do you have a tattoo?

Nope.

37. Are you a morning or a night person?

Night person. I think more clearly at night. But I also like early mornings for the same reason.

38. Have you ever slept past midday?

Yes. My first job was a call center agent, answering calls from US clients so I worked nights and slept in the day. I had a rotating schedule so there were times when my work ended at midnight so I'd sleep from around 5 a.m. to around 4 p.m. It felt weird every time.

39. Do you regret anything?

Only crazy people don't regret anything. I'm not that crazy.

40. Can you count the number of friends that you have on one hand?

Yes. I keep a few friends, mostly from my college days. We don't get to see each other often now because of work but we find time to get together when our work schedules permit. Usually to chill over coffee or watch a movie.

41. Do you wear glasses?

Yes.

42. Are you a picky eater?

Not really. There are certain foods that I don't like and would prefer not to eat or drink -- like bananas, oranges, oysters, squid, milk. Then again, I may randomly eat these things.

43. Would you die for someone?

Probably. I can't know for sure. I have pretty strong self-preservation instincts but I guess it depends on the situation.

44. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I'd love to be able to fly.

45. Do you believe in the supernatural?

Not really. But sometimes I get scared of my own imagination.

46. Would you rather be rich or famous?

I'd rather be rich. What good is being famous if you don't got the money to back it up? I mean it must be terrible what these celebrities go through everyday. Whereas rich people can afford to build themselves a hideout somewhere. Rich people are also not weird. Just eccentric. I think I'd like that.

47. Have you ever committed a crime?

Yes. Then again, who hasn't?

48. Time traveller or ghost?

Time traveller. I'd like to see Ancient Rome at its prime. History was my favorite subject.

49. Does anybody have a crush on you?

Oh, dozens, I'm sure. I am clueless about these things, however.

50. Are you in a relationship?

I just said I'm clueless about these things.

2009 Year-Ender Anime Rankings

This is my last post for 2009. I'm spending the holidays with family in the province and don't expect to log on to the Internet for the period. I'll come back next year and hopefully pick up where I left off. Before that, let me offer you my list of the best anime (IMHO) that 2009 has to offer. (NOTE: included are titles from the Winter 2008/2009 Season)

Most Highly Anticipated Series
Eve no Jikan
(Zoku Natsume Yuujin-chou, CANAAN, Eden of the East, Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom)
Only six episodes with one-month interval between each. As if that wasn't bad enough, after episode 4 Studio Rikka and Yoshiura decided to release the last two installments of Eve no Jikan only after two months. The anticipation almost killed me. XD But when it finally came out, it was so good I forgot how much I hated those two months. As wonderful as the last two episodes (and indeed, the entire series) turned out, I say take your time, Studio Rikka.

Naked guy in the middle of a busy street? Check. Cute token girl character with likeable personality? Check. But those aren't the only reason why the first episode of Eden of the East is a winner. It had everything going for it: mystery, likeable main characters, a possible romance, the evil shadow of an unseen villain, the list could go on. I can't say the same for the middle and final episodes but at the onset the series showed so much potential.

I cried shamelessly when Masaki made up with Tex. But it wasn't just the dramatic moment; it was everything about the final episode of Eve no Jikan. It was able to tie all the important loose ends together to create a tightly-packed vignette about a not-so distant future and the more presently-felt human condition.

I was only made aware of Eve no Jikan through one of my favorite blogs, Mono no Aware. The blogger wrote such a raving review about the series and I trust him enough to give the series a look-see. Let's just say I wasn't disappointed.

For a series that I only randomly picked up, Eve no Jikan turned out to be a big favorite of mine. In fact, it is one of my top 5 all-time favorite anime titles.

Favorite Female CharacterGod/Dorm Manager (Maria+Holic)
I liked Nakiami for her taciturn but thoughtful personality but God.is.made of Awesome, hands-down.
RUNNERS-UP:
  • Nakiami (Xam'd: Lost Memories) - I was completely taken the moment she appeared on screen. she was so cool and her beat kayak was so cool and her facial tattoos were so cool. anyway, she's just a really cool character
  • Alphard Alshaya (CANAAN) - she's a frickin' terrorist, dude!
  • Michiko Malandro (Michiko to Hatchin) - I chiefly like her character design. as for her personality, well, she's a bit of an idiot so...uhh yeah
  • Erin (Kemono no Souja Erin) - her development from carefree girl to a thoughtful young woman was brilliant to see

Favorite Male CharacterMihai (DOGS: Bullets & Carnage)
An assassin! And he's got a scar and a Russian-sounding name! Guy is absolutely kick-ass!
RUNNERS-UP:

Funniest CharacterMiyamae Kanako (Maria+Holic)
My favorite lesbian. XD Even though I dropped Maria+Holic, Kanako remains one of the most memorable and funniest characters from the 2009 line-up, if not because she's a flaming closet lesbian then because of her helplessness in the face of so much female pheromones. Excessive nose-bleeding and a certain blond cross-dressing boy making her life hell also helped.
RUNNERS-UP:

Favorite VillainAlphard Alshaya (CANAAN)
Alphard-sama! CANAAN wasn't the best series to come out in 2009, although I had high expectations of it. But Alphard made it worthwhile, especially in the last few episodes. I can totally understand why Liang Qi is obsessed with the woman. Why is she better than all the ass-kicking female superheroes out there? The answer is simple: She's a terrorist and very, very bad. If she had real balls and no boobs, I'd make her my waifu. ^.^
RUNNERS-UP:

Favorite CoupleCasshern and Lyuze (Casshern Sins)
I was rooting for them right from the start although I had no idea at the time where Casshern Sins was going to take their relationship. So when it did happen, Madhouse rendered it so artistically I was wowed beyond words. Currently, the two are a top contender in my OTP list of all time.
RUNNERS-UP:
  • Koji and Rina (Eve no Jikan) - sure it's two androids pretending to be human but it's still love
  • Kuronuma Sawako and Kazehaya Shouta (Kimi ni Todoke) - they are so cute
  • Benikawa Ishuu and Tsunomata Raigyo (Xam'd: Lost Memories) - my crack couple that went canon. for about five seconds before they went and blew up Raigyo

Favorite CrackNakiami and Yango (Xam'd: Lost Memories)
It's not pedophilia. 0.o Yango eventually gew up in the final episode of Xam'd: Lost Memories. Too bad Nakiami turned into stone. Still, with the phenomena called fanfiction, one can still find ways of getting them together.
RUNNERS-UP:
  • Rikou and Sammy (Eve no Jikan) - I have a thing for an android x human couples
  • Ein and Zwei (Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom) - well, Zwei at least had a thing for Ein but I don't know about the latter; when the feelings of one-half of the couple are ambiguous, that makes their pairing crack
  • Hamyuts Meseta and Mattalast (Armed Librarians: The Book of Bantorra) - I just like looking at the two of them together so imagine my surprise when they turn out to have a past together

Favorite Slash CoupleEdward and Alphonse Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Elricest WOOH! That's all. Honestly, Youko and Sei should have occupied this spot but since they only appeared for like two episodes in Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th Season, it hardly seems fair to make them win the top slash couple just because I have a sick obsession with yuri crack.
RUNNERS-UP:

No doubt about it. Aoi Bungaku is only into its fifth episode but I've already made up my mind that this definitely tops the dark series genre. It has everything I require from the darker side of anime: a brooding character, lots of psychobabble, stylized animation, suicide and insanity.

Toradora! won last time so I think it's time to name another title and what is better than Maria+Holic? I dropped this series before I could finish it but I am planning to pick it up again. Trap isn't my type of humor as I am more into deadpan or witty repartees but Maria+Holic proved to be a mixture of all sorts of comedic moments from slapstick to black to zingers and at the center of it all is, of course, Kanako, whom I've named the funniest character this season.

Best Drama Series
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
(Casshern Sins, Aoi Bungaku)
Actually, this anime surprised me. I was expecting it to be good and have awesome animation (it's by Production I.G.) but I honestly did not expect the show to take this direction. It's a disaster anime that focuses on the human aspect of it, particularly a couple of two kids (one of them irrepressibly optimistic, another a bitter thirteen-year-old going through the awkward teen years) and a female delivery bike driver all trying to go home and get back to their loved ones. It's just undiluted human drama that's surprisingly touching and deep.

Best Production Value

Casshern Sins came very close but it proved to be a non-contender against Eve no Jikan. I think the latter had the advantage of shorter length and longer gap between releases. Because of that, the studio and creator were able to really give each episode everything they've got.

Best Opening Theme"Falling Down" by Oasis (Eden of the East)
RUNNERS-UP:
"Shut Up and Explode" by Boom Boom Satellites (Xam'd: Lost Memories)
"Paraiso" by SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS (Michiko to Hatchin)
"Marigold" by orange pekoe (Ristorante Paradiso)

Best Ending Theme"Ai Shiteru" by Kourin (Zoku Natsume Yuujin-chou)
RUNNERS-UP:
"Hikari to Kage" by Kuno Shinji (Casshern Sins)
"Vacancy" by Kylee (Xam'd: Lost Memories)
"After the Rain" by cossami (Kemono no Souja Erin)

I actually have the OST and the Special Best Album. That's how much I love the music of Casshern Sins. The tracks helped create the fantastic mood of the anime but standalone they are surprisingly easy listening.

The anime that first got me interested in seiyuus. Of course, Maria-sama ga Miteru was going to win this spot.

It was more than the retro hair that gave Casshern Sins its unique look. It was the whole old school feel to it -- the handrawn figures, Casshern's sleek body despite its mechanical deadliness, the graceful figures of the rest of the characters, the steampunk-inspired rogue robots and the colors...oh, the colors! For an anime that shows a lot of deserts, it's a pretty colorful production.

It's by BONES so yes, I can understand why Xam'd: Lost Memories has flawless animation. It's not just the fight scenes (although they are always beautiful in this series); it's Benikawa smoking her pipe, Nakiami riding her beat kayak or Akiyuki trying to suppress the hiruko in his arm -- the ordinary things so to speak.

Kemono no Souja Erin has a very child-friendly character design but the backgrounds are another thing. Far from realistic, they are akin to watercolor paintings in all their washed up, textured glory.

Casshern Sins has one of the sexiest character designs, this despite the fact that most of the characters are robots.

Eve no Jikan is probably best described as a series of six vignettes with one overarching plot. Each episode is a complete story in itself. A classic story within a story and the greatest thing about it is that it was able to deliver without leaving any loose ends.

Production I.G. was all mysterious about what Eden of the East is. There was only that interesting-looking, politically-flavored poster. Then the synopsis revealed that it's about this girl who went to see the White House only to meet a strange Japanese guy who is wandering around the streets stark-naked with only a gun and a cellphone loaded in 12 Billion Yen. WTF? But it got me hooked.

Of course, was there any other choice? Eve no Jikan has won nearly all the important categories in the list. Xam'd: Lost Memories was a very enjoyable series, but it faltered a little bit in the last few episodes and some of the plot points did not add up. On the other hand, Casshern Sins was almost perfect but the pace was too slow for my taste. So that means Eve no Jikan.

Movie of the Year
Summer Wars
The movie you simply cannot miss about a tradition-bound family in rural Japan coming face to face with a state-of-the-art A.I. seemingly intent on destroying the world and their family along with it. It's the geeks vs. the machine, humanity vs. virtual reality, Denno Coil for the whole family! and much, much more...

And that ends 2009's year-ender report. Happy Holidays and a bountiful New Year to all! See you again in 2010!

Update: Catching Up on Stuff

Okay, so I'm back and just when the fall season is starting. Fortunately, there aren't that many interesting titles for this year and my list is even shorter than summer's. But I will perhaps be posting my final thoughts of some of the shows I watched in the summer: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Natsu no Arashi!, Eve no Jikan and Eden of the East. Hopefully, I'll also be able to post a review or two as well. In the meantime, I'll be catching up with some of the episodes I missed. Expect a preview post on the Fall Season 2009 soon.

Oasis - Falling Down (Eden of the East OP Single)

RELEASED: 03.09.2009
LABEL: Big Brother
TRACKLIST:
1. Falling Down
2. Those Swollen Hand Blues
3. Falling Down (The Gibb mix)
4. Falling Down (The Prodigy version)
5. Falling Down (A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble remix)

Falling Down is the opening single for the new Production I.G. anime series, Eden of the East. It's taken from Oasis' seventh studio album, called Dig Out Your Soul, which charted at #1 position in the band's home country and #2 in Japan. There are two tracks, besides the three different versions of Falling Down -- all of which are written and sung by the band's lead guitarist, Noel Gallagher, instead of his brother, lead vocals Liam.

The last I heard of Oasis was when I was in grade school. My older siblings who were in high school at the time were so into them that for weeks the band's songs were all I've been hearing. I guess that explains how I got into the whole Oasis fever back then and even had Champagne Supernova as my life theme. But then they sort of disappeared.

When this single came out, it was a complete surprise. I totally had no idea the band is still going on strong. Much less their song being tied-in with an anime series, of all things. While I wouldn't call Falling Down their strongest offering since the days of yore, I do love the mature, philosophical lyrics on this track. I am not liking Those Swollen Hand Blues very much though or the other versions of Falling Down for that matter.

Eden of the East 04-05: Like Puppets on a String

IMHO, Eden of the East is still the best summer offering this side of whatever. What I especially like about it is how tightly the whole show is starting to look. There's the very interesting plot that just keeps on going and then there's the character development that's acutely insightful. If you know your anime, character and plot don't often go well together, but in Eden of the East, these two elements flow together as seamlessly as they ought to.
EPISODE 04: True Reality, False Reality
More Screencaps from Eden of the East 04

After leaving Akira's place without nothing but a note, Saki returns to her home where her family awaits her. Meanwhile, Akira tries to find out from Juiz whether or not he really killed 20,000 NEETs. Juiz, however, is unable to do no more than confirm that Akira did gather the NEETs in one place but as to what happened to them afterwards, she doesn't know. Likewise, Juiz can't tell him why he was chosen as a Selecao member or who the Supporter is. At this, Akira decides to follow Kondo's advice and just ask the other members. His search eventually leads him to Number V, Dr. Hiura, a famous brain surgeon who has used his money to establish a self-managing private hospital. Hiura, however, believes that Akira is the Supporter, there to finish him off. To protect himself until his project is finished, he drugs Akira. Meanwhile, Saki is still moping about Akira's sudden disappearance when she gets a call from Ohsugi inviting her to go together with him to their respective job interviews. After their talk, Saki sends Akira a text message, asking if he has regained his memories. Later, Akira wakes up from his drug-induced sleep to find himself in an abandoned room. There, Hiura finally revealed to him that the Selecao System is run by a mysterious entity known only as Mr. Outside. The System is made so that if any one of the twelve members abandons their mission, uses the money for their personal desires or runs out of money without saving the country he or she will die at the hands of the Supporter. As to the identity of the Supporter, only Mr. Outside knows it. Moreover, if one of the members fulfills his mission first, all the rest will be exterminated. Akira believes that with all that Hiura has done, his mission is finished. But according to Hiura, his accomplishments are not enough to please Mr. Outside. True enough, after Akira leaves the hospital, the Supporter arrives to kill Hiura.

EPISODE 05: Now's Not the Time to be Thinking About That
More Screencaps from Eden of the East 05

The episode begins with a female member of the Selecao waking up at a hotel to find a dead body of a man in the same room. Seemingly not surprised, she picks up her phone and asks Juiz to take care of it. Meanwhile, Akira meets a guy who reveals himself to be one of the NEETs that Akira gathered. It turns out that Akira did not kill them but merely dumped all 20,000 of them in Dubai where they were forced to work and reintegrate themselves to society. Later, he asks Juiz how far he could go using his cellphone. Due to some misunderstanding, Juiz ends up taking as an order what Akira meant only as an example, but at any rate, Akira realizes just what the Selecao is capable of. Just then, he notices Saki's message from yesterday and hurriedly sends her a reply. However, Saki at that moment is on her way to her job interview, which doesn't turn out well. Worse still, the interviewer plays a prank on her, inviting her to lunch then standing her up and even arranging for a guy to dump a bowl of beef soup on her. After that disastrous experience, Saki finally decides to leave and gets picked up by Akira, who has tracked her down with Juiz' help. Despite her earlier promise with Ohsugi to have drinks with him, Saki lets Akira take her away. They end up at the pier where Saki rants to him about her horrible day and how she can't go home and face her brother-in-law. After hearing her complain, Akira kisses her on the lips and then tells that she could come with him to his place. Meanwhile, a depressed and drunk Ohsugi catches the attention of the female Selecao member.

COMMENTS:

So we get more clues about Akira's mysterious past and I must say that I'm glad to learn he's not a bad guy -- i.e. he did not kill those NEETs. Then again, I don't think this series is about good vs. bad at all because the way everything is set up, Eden of the East looks all set to blur the lines.

Other Selecao members are finally showing their faces but other than Kondo and Hiura, we don't know who they are or what they're going to do about Akira. Well, the blue-haired lady doesn't seem too concerned about him but that guy with the redstone ring looks shady. Anyway, Ohsugi is in big trouble, if indeed that blue-haired lady is a serial killer.

As for Saki, I'm also somewhat relieved to find out that she isn't just the token female lead. It looks like the very real problems that she, along with other young people situated similarly, is facing is going to help Akira come up with the best way to fulfill his mission and meet Mr. Outside. That means she isn't just there to tag along but is there to provide him with the perfect foil for his character.

One aspect about Eden of the East that bears stressing is the fact that it manages to be quite extreme (even fantastical to some extent) but at the same time heavily grounded in realism. Who here hasn't experienced a little of what Saki went through during her job interview? After all, not all job interviews go as smoothly as we'd like. And who here hasn't had a crush on one of their friends only to be the last to find out that they're just not that into you? Clearly, even as Akira's mission is the prime mover in this series, it's the little problems that Saki and Ohsugi are facing that really hit the point home.

Here's to hoping for another spectacular episode next.

Eden of the East 02-03: Figuring Out the Past

And the plot picks up very quickly.... excellent!
EPISODE 02: Melancholy Monday
More Screencaps from Eden of the East 02

Akira and Saki arrive in Japan but find that the place is in chaos due to the missile attack. They find out that a plane has been shot down, leading Saki to wonder about it. It turns out that all the prior missile attacks on the country had yielded no victim; hence, the name "Careless Monday." Just then, Saki gets a call from her family telling her that they might be late in picking her up because of the traffic jam. Akira also gets a call from Juiz, informing him that he has just entered the Selecao System and that he is to start performing his duties as one of the "Privileged." Without any idea what she's on about, Akira tests her by asking her to get him out of the airport quickly. Barely a minute passes before security personnel arrive to escort Akira and Saki through the crowd. Once outside, Saki offers to go with Akira as he tries to find his home. At the terminal, Akira strikes up a conversation with Kondo, a Selecao member who has been secretly tracking him. Kondo asks him about Selecao but Akira does not remember anything. Later, while waiting for his boat to arrive, Saki tells Akira a little about herself. When the boat arrives, Akira gets on it while Saki stays behind. However, at the last minute, Akira holds out his hand and Saki takes it. Meanwhile, Kondo is still tracking down Akira and this time he has a plan.

EPISODE 03: In the Light of the Late Show
More Screencaps from Eden of the East 03

Akira and Saki find Akira's home, which turns out to be a shopping mall. A puppy greets them and Akira discovers the place that was in the photograph. With nothing else to do, Akira offers to watch with Saki any movie she likes in the mall cinema. Meanwhile, Kondo follows them to the mall and gets inside the building through a back entrance. There, he sees a graffiti on the wall which reads "Kill Takizawa Akira," reminding him of the rumor about Akira being responsible for the disappearance of several NEETs (Not Engaged for Employment or Training). While Saki watches the movie by herself, Kondo comes up to Akira, who still has no idea bout his plan. After beating him up and taking his cellphone, Kondo reveals that each Selecao member starts out with 10 billion yen but once that money runs out, they would be killed. Unfortunately, Juiz tells him that the cellphones are activated by a biometric system unique to each Selecao member. Akira then calls him up, telling him that he has Kondo's wallet. They agree to meet at the Kabuki District. While waiting, Kondo gets stabbed by his wife. When Akira arrives later, a dying Kondo tells him to track down the other Selecao members via feeds from their cellphones. Before he dies, Kondo believes that Selecao arranged his death by leaking information about his affair to his wife.

COMMENTS:

So after a rather quirky start, Eden of the East gets right down to business. Now I see why the director thinks he can make a great story out of this series with just 11 episodes. The series has a way of drawing you into the whole mysterious plot through seemingly random events. In episode 2, we find out what "Careless Monday" is but as for the reasons behind it, that remains to be a mystery. The same with Akira as we find out as early as Episode 1 that he wiped his own memories for reasons yet to be revealed. And now with Kondo's dying revelation in Episode 03, we find out that there are ten other people who are like Akira and who might be able to tell him something about the mysterious Selecao. And now the question remains, what's Saki's role in all of this?

The pacing seems pretty tight as each episode reveals just a tiny bit of the plot but at the same time whet your appetite for more. For instance, we know that Akira before the memory-wipe is probably not a nice guy -- an understatement, considering how he seems to be responsible for killing 20,000 NEETs in the vain belief that it would make the world a better place. Now how to reconcile this Akira with the current, happy-go-lucky one is up to the coming episodes. All we know so far is that Akira, and I suppose all the other Selecao members, including Kondo, are seen as saviors by Selecao supporters.

Noblesse Oblige -- the obligation of the rich to the poor is to build a better society. Only problem is that somewhere along the way, somebody got the twisted notion of giving ten billion yen each to ten people and leave it up to them to "save" society. Kondo was spot on about this: How can a single person save the world with only ten billion yen?

But Kondo, I think, got disillusioned and ended up wasting all his money on his mistress. He thought perhaps that since it's virtually impossible to build a better society with Selecao's limited resources, he decided to blast it all off for his own personal enjoyment. On the complete opposite side of the spectrum is Akira. We don't know everything he's done but we know that despite his good intentions he -- indeed, the entire Selecao System -- was proceeding from a wrong premise which, of course, led to the making of wrong conclusions and coming up with the wrong solutions to an existential problem.

That aside, it seems that the series' focus at the moment is Akira's involvement with Selecao and hardly anything about Saki. Romance is hinted at but never really explored and with the angle that Eden of the East is taking I don't think there's going to be much going on in that aspect, except that it's probably going to continue to exist if only to give Saki a reason to stick by Akira.

I don't want to expect too much from Eden of the East because I want to avoid that disappointed feeling one gets from one too many hyped up shows in the past, but I think that even if Eden of the East didn't quite deliver at the final it's still going to turn out to be one enjoyable show. At least, I hope it will. With the first three solid episodes, that almost feels like a certainty.

First Impression: Eden of the East

This is the one series I'm so looking forward to this season and I'm very, very glad that it delivered. 4.5 out of 5!

The series opens with protagonist, a 17-year old girl named Saki, talking about her childhood friend who left and never came back. In retrospect, she wonders if this childhood friend has become the "prince" of her life. At this point, a photo of a young man with Saki flash on the screen. Back to the present, Saki, who has just graduated from college, is in Washington D.C. on a sight-seeing trip, when she gets into trouble with some of the guards . Whether it is her fortune or not, she is saved in time by a guy -- rather, a naked Japanese guy (the same one in the earlier photo) -- who has no memories and no clue about his past except for a cellphone charged with 10 billion dollars and a gun. Later, he finds out that he might actually be an international spy named Akira and he decides to accompany Saki back to Japan for reasons yet unknown.

I already had a good impression about Eden of the East when I saw the promotional video. That initial impression just got cemented. But let's start with the first thing you will notice about the first episode of Eden of the East: the character design.

I mentioned in my earlier posts that the character designs are by Umino Chika, the manga-ka of Honey & Clover, whose soft, rounded stationary-esque style I, at first, imagined would look out of place in a futuristic-slash-political intrigue setting. And indeed, the characters initially look entirely cartoonish against a vastly detailed, semi-realistic background of 3D buildings and cars and such real-life places like the White House. However, after a while and especially after you get blown away (as I did) by the opening sequence, you will soon forget about that insignificant snag and just enjoy the show for what it is, which is AWESOME.

Judging from the first episode, Eden of the East is a pretty good-looking series. I liked everything I saw in it from the shot of the American flag with a jet flying over it to the faces of the extra characters, including even the wacky expressions and humorous SD faces that the main characters made. And don't get me even started with the opening and ending -- art, dude, A-R-T! Just about the coolest opening and ending video sequences I've seen since I don't remember.

Based on the series' promo info, I quite expected a dark, serious tone to the story. So when the humor hit, I was quite unprepared but pleasantly surprised and I think I actually LOLed more than once what with the whole "at that time, I was very cold" (Don't worry. You'll get it once you watch it). Granted, this episode is light in tone but what I really liked about it is the delivery. Despite the obvious political angle, the humor fits right in and does not detract from the main thing.

Of course, it helps that the main characters are extremely likeable. One would expect Akira to be brooding and mopey for having had his memory erased but the storytellers have not fallen into that stereotype trap and instead made the character accept his situation with an easygoing attitude and even make some tongue-in-cheek references to Taxi Driver and Leon (the potted plant by the window is a dead giveaway), both of which are films about assassins by Luc Besson, and also to the Bourne series by Robert Ludlum. Saki also turns out to be a potentially great leading lady. A bit naive, maybe, but certainly no shrinking violet and no helpless damsel. While seeing a naked man standing in front of her does give her the creeps, she is not afraid to go after the same naked man in order to get back her passport and wallet, which she needs in order to get back to her home country.

And finally, I already said a lot about the intriguing storyline. It's the perfect formula actually: a past shrouded in mystery + chance encounters x political intrigue. While the first episode did not set everything into motion right away, enough points have been established for a decently set up plot. And with only eleven episodes, I doubt they are going to waste much time before they get to the goods.
